Who has tack lockers in their lorry, in the horse area that likes them?!

I seem to read plenty of reports about people not ever wanting them and they're an accident waiting to happen etc, but do people on here have them and actually like them ie would you buy a lorry with them again?

We have a small tack locker under the living seats (accessed from the outside obviously!) only fits two saddles, but its great. Wouldn't have one that is in the horse bit as doesn't imho give them enough room :)

We have lockers into horse area & they don't cause a problem if the lorry is high and wide enough IMO.

Probably not, but many aren't and I hate seeing horses squashed in - horseboxes should be about travelling horses in comfort, not people (although both is great obviously!)

The space under the seats in our living was never used anyway, so made sense for us :)

We have them in the horse area and like them. Did use to have a lorry which had one going in to the living, was nice but not big enough.
Both mine actually travel better with them infront of them as seem to position better. I'm not saying that they were bad travellers before but when checking on them they both seem a lot happier.
I know some people hate them as think that they will cause as accident and a friend wouldn't have them due to travelling mother and foal on a regular basis

I have mine into the living area and prefer it but not necessarily because the horses need the extra room - but because I find it easier to manouvre around them and tack up inside when it's pouring with rain outside!

Each to their own I guess - my lorry is quite narrow so wouldn't work for me.

I just had a box built and had a choice but chose to put them in the horse area. The lorry is plenty high and wide enough to accomodate them and any size horse as I wouldnt travel more than 2 big horses in there and the partitions are fully adjustable so they can be put on a longer diagonal for any absolutely HUGE beastie! My lockers arent too deep, and are high to prevent the temptation for them to put their hooves up on them, and run down the entire horse area so there is no corner for them to catch themselves on :).

I have lorry tack lockers and do find them a little bit of a pain to be honest, i only travel one horse mostly but it does make the room smaller when you are trying to squeeze past with saddles and bridles etc. It is high enough that i have never had any problem with horses getting feet up etc. I have a bit to put a bucket of water in although does get covered in hay when traveling but good when stationery as horse has accsess to water! Not sure i would choose them to be honest if starting again.

I don't like lorries with the tack locker into the horse area and wouldn't buy one with that format.

Firstly, my horse is 17.3hh and wears 7'3ft rugs so needs all of the horizontal length he can get! He has been in a lorry with tack lockers and was very uncomfortable.

Secondly, they can be dangerous with some horses trying to climb up them/rearing up onto them.

Thirdly, they are a pain in the ar$e if you have horses in the lorry and need to nip through the partitions in front of them- particularly if you have something a bit frisky or green and want to have the partition shut while you are tying up as you then find you are a bit stuck with the horse!

I have them, and like them but last year I bought a horse who persistently climbed on the tack locker when left in the lorry scary stuff. He has hobbles now.
I like the way I can but a feed bowl on and they can have a feed in the lorry .
And I can use a flat bucket of water and leave them with a drink. I use quick release caribiners to secure them.

This exactly!

I know of two peoples horses in last few months that got on top of them and caused serious damage :(

It really cuts down the options when you are lorry hunting though I can tell you.

If I had a new lorry I would only have lockers so that they were in 2 of the partitions so I had at least 2 spare without lockers.

I have a mare that jumps on the lockers and is so thick she gets stuck and one of my boys has jumped on the lockers twice and injured himself quite badly! I have also has several other horses jump on the lockers and it is not nice trying to get them down with other horses either side!

I am lucky in the fact I have my lorry which has lockers and living for stay away and the OHs lorry with no lockers and a tack area with day living so it works well as we use his when taking the mare who jumps in the lockers.

Well I had my lorry built with a lorry in the living and the horse area free of lockers

Then I took it to a reputable builder to get one put in recently ! My living one is far too small, so had a massive one put in to accomodate my dangling stock saddles

My lorry is too heavy to carry 3 - so I've put this in the rear stall (near bulk head) leaving two spaces locker free for the horses

Although I am a little peeved, as the builders forgot to modify the partition near the locker so that my fat body can squeeze through even when flush to it (probably not a problem as normally only have one on board anyway, but that's not the point....)

I can put pics up if you like?

I had the living raised up in mine, and a tack locker put in with a cut through all the way under the living. Loads of storage, none of the worry of horses getting on the locker and injuring themselves (and I've seen some real nasties, on well known makes of lorry too), no rug rack so better through-flow of air in the horse area. Would not change it for anything.

SpottedCat everytime you post you make me jealous!! Still I did get the ramp sorted so I can open and close with one hand and kept the krailberg (shame my tele got nicked in the process!)

Sorry! I do appreciate I am exceedingly lucky, and I pinch myself regularly when I see it!! It is also, I think, a fair exchange for living with a violent alcoholic who made many years of my life exceedingly miserable (not to mention painful!). I also do realise that I am way too young and not nearly well-off enough to be driving round in it. :o

Exactly this, had 2 very naughty 4 year old who jumped on the tack lockers, not very pleasant.

This is what I have now, due to afore mentioned 4 year olds! I love it, loads and loads of storage and no compromised space, and as the floor is raised, it is easy to reach the top cupboards in the living!

Hee hee ignore the green eyed monster - just a shame you didn't build yours earlier so you could have steered me right from the start !!:D
Just to add insult to injury I've been told my GRP is rotting, not that there's much you can do about it - good examples of lorry building stories!!

This for me, my boy travels at an angle (although im still trying to find the right one) and is a big lump so trying to move around him with a tack locker in there with him will be a right pain. On the other hand i think he might travel better with them in as he will have less space to move about and try and put his head on the floor but he is the type to get stuck as he is a bit dumb

Don't know what I would do next time a round ( some chance at the moment ) raised floors in the living where not done when my lorry was built think that's what I would look at if I ever got a new one.

Im not sure about the raised floor having enough hight to be much use!! a friends lorry is like that and there is about 14"max high so not much fits in and stuf rolls into the middle so you end up fishing things
out with a yard brush, on the subject of the horse area ones I think they are fine providing they are high enough, and well built with a sloping top.. very usefull as they have the hight esp if you have a long one that goes right down so bridles hang nicely.. the other way is have them into the living but then you lose cupbord space inside the living...

All my stuff lives in plastic boxes and the space is easy for me to pull stuff out of! Have never fished anything out using anything other than my hands!! I also haven't lost any cupboard space - it's just good design.

My tack locker goes into the living and makes the worktop for the sink/hob. It's only a small lorry (couldn't take bigger than 15.2hh) so tack lockers into living would be impossible.

The only thing I'd change about the lorry is the fact the steps are inset in the living rather than fold out on the outside. The amount of times people (and the dog) have fallen down those steps!

We've had lorries both with fold out steps and inset steps and have to say much prefer the inset steps.

Me too - know so many people with the fold out steps who have forgotten to fold the steps back in, driven off and caused loads of damage to their own lorries and other people's vehicles!
