So my ISH has now lost two shoes in a month (the same shoe!) he is in a six acre field with my others and it is on a hill. field is boggy in places but rest is fine. He is on rehab for DDFT tears and navicular changes and it is going well - the thing that has worked is new farrier and being shod differently with more heel support... but I now have this problem instead! He wears over reach boots down to the floor and is still managing to get them off! I can't turn out in small paddocks as it will just trash the ground and one of the horses goes through fencing... I am reluctant to remove shoes for now with how much improvement he has made but short of keeping him in all of the time, how can I keep them on?! Or do I just keep forking out for a new shoe every two weeks or so?

Any ideas? So frustrating!

Robin started loosing shoes a lot. It turned out his feet were getting weak and he got white line disease. Got his feet sorted and stronger and fingers crossed he has improved. I have a friend who had better results with 2 pairs of over reach boots on one slightly bigger than the other. Soli (3 lost shoes in 4 days....) had success with the westrop petal over reach boots. He used to pull shoe and boots off but the petals seemed to snap rather than everything coming off

Speak to your farrier. If he is pulling off shoes that regularly then the farrier needs to re-think what the shoeing options are.
the farrier will likely suggest reduced turnout area, and not with other horses.
the mud won’t help, but if area is smaller, then it minimises the chances of a pulled shoe.
shoe secure may work, if over reaching is the main cause, but your farrier will likely be able to tell more, from how the shoe has been removed, if you can find the shoe.

I would disagree with smaller area being better. Solis shoes came off while turning in the narrowing field going as fast as he could. I would regularly find the shoe at the end of the skid mark!

Not necessarily - my boy needed heel support, the first two sets of shoes he ripped off, constantly, spoke to my farrier and he came up with a new solution that didn't rip his shoes off

I feel your pain! My remedially shod horse will be back to barefoot with hoof boots from
Next week- three farriery visits to nail shoes back on over Christmas made the decision for me!
I’m not sure a smaller turn out area would work- mine has been known to pull them off in the stable (with over reach boots on) ?‍♀️

I don't have many options in the fact that what the farrier could do to reduce the chances if it being pulled off, we cannot have done because he needs the heel support. I'm going to ask the farrier about the shoe secure things on Monday and go from there I think.

What helped with mine was two pairs of overreach boots - ones underneath that were big enough to reach the ground and a bit more, and slightly smaller ones on top to keep them held down. This was back during dry weather, so I also smothered her hooves with Kevin Bacon twice a day, and she'd already been on Pro Hoof for a year.

It worked for long enough for some healthier hoof to grow through, and it's now been six months or so since she lost a shoe.

They are really easy to fit. Just need farrier to put stud holes in shoes. They take a few attempts to get on at first but after that you can get them on in seconds.

What a frustrating problem and why is it you can grid search a field and not find the shoe but three months later it is right there by the gate staring you in the face? My farrier says rasping hooves is like grating cheese at the moment with all the rain we have had. He has me spraying iodine on my horse‘s white hoof which is prone to abscesses and applying Kevin Bacon winter formula all round.
