Has anyone any good ideas to keep shoes on? My 7 yr old hanoverian has lost 4 in 6 mths- is that a lot? He likes to canter in the field, is lame without them so wondered if anyone has used boa or old mac boots? All advice gratefully accepted!!

My TB used to loose shoes - it became a real pain as by pulling them off he weakened his hoof and having it repeatedly nailed back on weakened it further. I put him onto formula 4 feet, keratex twice a week, kevin bacon hoof dressing, and over-reach boots on (even in the stable) - we havent lost a shoe - yeah!!!
I was going to try the cavello boots if the sups didnt work - but no need. Apparently the boots are really good - you just need to choose the ones that best fit his hooves - I did a search on here and found quite a bit of advise on hoof boots.

Last year without fail every time my boy was shod he would pull one off within 7-10 days

Mine are all barefoot and have boots for when they hack on stony ground. One of them perfers to wear his to jump too, even if it's good going. Look at the Easy Care website, they have loads of boot information. As above, the fit is the most important thing, if you get that wrong you'll put yourself off. If the fit is right, you just have to get used to putting the boots on and off and then they are great. Much cheaper than shoeing in the long run (mine have all lasted 2-3 years and haven't actually worn a set out yet!) and also better for their feet.

what does you farrier suggest (appart from shooting horse, cos that's what they all say

I would defo ask his professional opnion on supplement and management issues etc............ as they have normal seen everything

And failing that i would look into option of changing farrier to remedial farrier but if you going to change BE professional about swapping.

As it DEFO shouldn't reflect that your first farrier was bad, BUT a change of farrier can work. As they all do shoe slightly differently - which IMHO doesn't make first farrier a bad farrier AT ALL, just another farrier could have a different angle on how to shoe your horse for type of work etc.

Thankyou for your reply- seen new farrier today who has made me feel loads better! has always been out with over reach boots on, but when you are 17 hh it's a long way from your brain to your feet!! So watch this space - hopefully will find a solution x
