Viewed a few rust buckets but half of them I never get to view as I make arrangements to see them and then the day before they text me to say its been sold :(

I'm looking for a 3.5t box that is safe enough to use now, doesn't need to look pretty. It needs to take x1 16hh horse and have a moveable partition so I can make one side bigger.
Budget is £3k but can possibly go to £5k.
I don't want to be travelling all round the country, I'd say max 60 miles away from Chertsey,Surrey.

I doubt you will get anything decent for 3k - maybe think about a trailer instead?? Most decent 3.5t even the old ones are 15k plus...

I have seen some what looks from the pictures very nice for this budget but I'm not quick enough to view them. Until the lighter evenings come its pointless going during the week. By the time the weekend comes they have gone.
I passed my test in 98 so I can't tow and to be honest I don't like the idea of trailers and Nadia hates travelling in them.

Mine is and older LT35 but with a lovely coachbuilt body, it is forward facing and although you can't move the partition there is plenty of room - much more than in a trailer, it is for sale for £4k with a years MOT (just being done now) A friend is buying it but if she changes her mind (which I doubt she will but you never know) do you want me to let you know?

Yes please, thanks.

I have seen a few nice ones 10 - 15k but nothing below unless you mean one of the van type?

Clearly you are a stuck up snob, with ideas above your station, your views on such matters and your disregard to other peoples views are unnecessary and unwanted.

I also have an older LT35. Brought it for £1500 a few months ago. It's perfectly safe for my 17hh. Travel sideways, movable partition, living. Only thing wrong with it is its bright pink! So it's more than easy to get a decent lorry in your budget

You could try giving travel two horseboxes a call, just google traveltwo horsesboxes.
I have never bought from them but they were pretty helpful when we were looking.
They may have something in your price range.

Try E-bay as there are loads of cheaper boxes coming on it all the time. But do please get a horsebox mechanic to check it out.

Mine's actually up on the travel two horsebox site and is N reg absolute super star. Trouble is I am in Aberdeen and we don't seem to be able to arrange a pick up delivery. I think she will ask about 7.5K. Mind you it only has a genuine 58K miles and I had another partition made for stability. Its a wee cracker though and just had new oil sump and battery. The Mark 1's are 'bullet proof' mechanically. I'd be really scared to go less than 5K or to go with a non-proven manufacturer though.

Hello Claire

I too am having the same trouble, I have found alot of the cheaper van conversions are not always safe, I viewed two last week where the bulkhead (the partition between the driving cab and the horses) was the standard one not strengthened in any way. In an accident I dread to think what would happen. If you find one with this problem get a quote from a garage/coachbuilder to strengthen existing or remove and make new.

I have found a Renault Master van conversion within my price range (which is the same as yours - although you get alot nicer for around 7-8k, just too much for me to pay)

Does anyone have a Renault Master - are they any good? please tell me the fault with yours, (I think this info would help you as well Claire) sorry to add another question on your thread.

Hi There. I have a fab little 3.5 tonne lorry for sale. It is a Ford transit (E reg)and made by lambourne. It was built from new as a horse box and done 117k. Its a great box, cheap to run, tax and insure and would take a 16hh no probs! Has moveable partitions too and fully padded for safety and comfort. My 15.3 had loads of room! Just passed MOT and has 6 months tax. Im looking for £5,250. pm me if your interested! Im in Bedfordshire.

Can I just add a word of warning. You live in West London, there was an article in the H&H last week, that next year horseboxes will be liable for the emmission zones in London, if you live close to the emmission zone, you might have a problem using an older lorry.

Ah, should update that. No longer live in West London and am not likely to drive within the M25 so this issue is no longer a problem :-)

I also have aolder lorry, bought for £1800 ... £600 for basic repairs and MOT as it had been standing over a year and it was good to go ... TOUCH WOOD. Hasn't given me masses of trouble/

I'm sure you could get a great little box for that money. My friend has recently picked up a d reg forward facing lt35, old I know, but it has been looked after so well she cannot fault it.
The only thing I would say, is you may have to travel...I travelled for three hours to get mine!! It may be worth spending a day on the road looking at a few. Mine's no Oakley, but my mechanic says its how it drives that matters!
Floor and chassis rust should be on top of the check list. All lorries will have rust from being outside. Also a weighbridge cert, don't let them fob you off, you can always check out the local bridges online!
I know how frustrating it is finding what you want, it took me 6 months to find mine, but something will come up! Horsequest, Horseandhound, Horsemart, Horsequest, Ebay, Friday-ad!!I used to be on them every day, twice a day, my eyes are only just recovering!!

op..

I took me a while to find mine and i paid 2.5k there is some awful rubbish out there!

Yours is a lovely box. Tell me about it. The ones that I have actually got to see haven't been very nice at all and despite me asking before I make the journey if anything needs doing and being assured no I've got there to find a different story.
