Both mares have been in nearly 10 days after being chased by a dog around the field, Big lad was fine but both girls came in lamanitic. Vet came out, box rest and Danilon and should be fine, called on Friday as I wasn't happy that little mare seemed worse than when she first came in, vet said up Danilon and call back Wednesday.
Today she is even worse, so vet coming back out at 2pm. If is wasn't bad enough the last bad weather damaged 4 stables, we have 3 ponies lame and 2 stables, so we had to double up the 2 little ones, if someone else comes in lame we are stuffed!

Quick re-read your sig!

Seriously, that's a right pain. Hope you've been able to trace the dog and give the owner a piece of your mind and hopefully the vet bill as well.

I know, I keep reading it but its not working lol. I know the person and the dog, not a hope they would pay, they were trying to hit the dog with sticks because they couldn't catch it! They live next to my field and TBH I do not trust what might happen if I were to go round, although I am going to call S.S.P.C.A to visit, they never walk him, hes a big 6 mth old GSD, lovely boy but lots of pent up energy.

Do you have a sand school? Will make laminitic pony more comfortable as the sand will support the whole hoof. What are you feeding her? Magnesium oxide and salt are great for laminitis

Nope no school, shes currently stabled on matting with a shavings bed on top. She is on Metformin and Magnesium mixed into a small hand full of safe and sound chaff.

i hope they get better. my friends lami and cushing pony and her friend got attacked by a dog this summer- but the owner and dog ran off. luckily they got away with some scars.
i can't believe the dogs owners will not give you some money. as it is completely their fault. i would feel very guilty if my dog was responsible for a horses injury and i didn't at least give something towards the vets costs.

Its one of those things, I can not prove that my girls are ill because of their dog, they have no clue about horses, they were happy to let their last dogs ( JR's ) come into my field and wander around, who would also snap at you if you tried to get them out. They are always saying the dog loves the horses, yeah, he would love to eat one is more like it!

Poor you it does sound a bit of a nightmare, but chin up it will get better. The spring will be here soon (honest !!!) and everything will look a lot better. Sending a hug and healing vibes.

Vet been but person who was holding her had low battery on her phone so waiting for her to get home and call me x

If I remember what my trimmer told me correctly, most of the uk soil is higher in potassium than sodium, so salt brings the sodium levels up so the horse is better able to absor mag - ox.

Interesting, thank you, sure it can not hurt to try x

Well, minimum 3 months box rest for the little one, Styrofoam for her feet after tomorrow's trim and xrays when able to travel, other girl is in for another 2-3 weeks but doing fine.

Could you explain to them that when their dog was chasing your ponies, it upset them so much that they are both now ill and on medication. That you like their dog but could they please keep it from getting in your field. If it was to get in a farmers field they have the right to shoot it and you would hate for that to happen. (This is the whimps way of dealing with it.) Or if you have got brave angry pants at hand, tell them you will report their dog and if caught chasing farm animals it WILL get shot. You will send them the bill for the treatment the ponies need and if the dog is caught in your field again, you will catch it and take it to the pound.
P.S Failing that, let the ponies into their garden and see if they like that.

I like your thinking lol x

Send the police round it is illegal to allow this to happen. and send the vet bill.

I can not prove their dog caused both mares to get laminitis. Plus I know they will not pay, if I leave it to hem to pay my vet is out of pocket and then will not treat my horses x

You will have to pay the bill and they obviously won't, but that plus a police visit should stop the dog being allowed to run around out of control.
It is illegal for dogs to worry sheep, I assume the same law applies to horses.

I would suggest fitting rubber frog supports to your lame horses and putting them both on very deep beds. Maybe your vet could prescribe stronger pain relief such as Finadyne.
As you are having problems with these dogs suggest you put up additional Equi-fencing which is like tight not sheep fencing which a dog will not get through.
Write to owners of dog and advise them to prevent their dogs from getting on your land or in future they will be held responsible for vets bills. Also contact police and local dog warden.

Apparently not - horses are not regarded as livestock (!!?) but as pets, in the eyes of the Law.

Send them my way hun Kia would soon give them a healthy respect for horses, if they got away anyroads.

Hate people that think its ok to walk dogs in amongst livestock, yes its not the dogs fault but its the dogs that do the damage.

I wouldn't let me dog loose near my own horses never mind someone elses!

3-6 months box rest for the little mare and another 2-3 weeks for my other mare, will have to keep looking for another yard in the mean time.

Bet you've got a well trained, properly exercised dog and you keep it on a lead near livestock though.

Its pretty much never the dog of someone responsible who'll pay up whose dog does something like this though
