Last December I had to unexpectedly make the heartbreaking decision to have my beautiful boy put to sleep. I wrote this poem a couple of days later and it very much sums up how I feel. I had hoped that Horse and Hound would publish it, as I know from social media that many owners have related to it and appreciated the fact that I have shared it, but apparently they don’t publish poems. However, I thought that if I put it on the forum many readers will get to see it and I hope that those of you who have gone through a similar experience will get some comfort from it.
To Lose an Angel
Cancel Christmas,
It’s not wanted this year,
You can keep all your presents,
Your goodwill and cheer.
Everything‘s different,
The three ponies looking on,
The heartbeat of the stables,
So suddenly gone.
He was such a big presence,
It seems all the lights have gone out,
You feel like you’re screaming,
But no one can hear you shout.
Who would have believed,
That silence could be so loud,
Still you’d feel alone,
Engulfed in a crowd.
You’ve lost your angel,
Your partner, your best friend,
At this moment you can’t see,
When your heart will mend.
Together through the countryside,
No longer to wander,
Intrepid explorers,
Forever asunder.
Your bond unbreakable,
In each other you did trust,
You know one day you’ll have to let go,
But right now it would not be just.
I’m sure that by next year,
Things won’t be as sad,
But in your heart he’ll still be beside you,
Softly whinnying ‘come on dad’.
