thought it might be worth asking here (you lot know everything! lol) in case anybody had experienced anything similar.
My manager's 7 year old Pekingese had quite a sudden loss of appetite about 2 months ago. At this point she was x-rayed to check for a blockage and none was found. Since then she has dropped from a healthy weight of about 7.5kg to 4.5kg (weighed today). She has been offered many different foods, from her normal Royal Canin mixed with Nature's Diet to cooked chicken breast, and for the past few weeks has eaten nothing but treat sausages and Applaw's cat pouches. She is still bright and seems happy in herself but even her (very attentive) owner feels she is in pain. She lives with her mother and sister, who she still finds the energy to argue with, and goes to work each day with her owner, so is under basically constant supervision. She hasn't kept any food down since Wednesday, and she literally eats half a treat sausage (about an inch long) at a time. She is also drinking excessively (three times what she was drinking prior to this). Vet has said not diabetes.
I'm not sure what she was originally treated for, but for about 3 weeks she has been on ulcer medication and anti-sickness tablets, which obviously haven't helped. I suggested she was scoped three weeks ago before this treatment started but the vet wanted to treat first. After the owner thinking she was dead last night when she fell asleep in her arms, she visited the vet this morning. Her white blood cell count (not sure whether it was up or down) suggested an infection was leaving the system, but her red blood cell count was down so she's a little anaemic. Her liver and kidney function is fine, she had blood tests this morning. She is now booked in to be scoped (finally) on Monday morning, and dependent on this she may be referred to the college in Dublin. For the weekend she has been put on stronger ulcer medication, anti-sickness tablets and antibiotics to hopefully increase her appetite. She is insured however the company hasn't been notified yet, the owner wasn't planning on claiming until the college was mentioned.
I'm just wondering if anyone has similar experiences or ideas as to what this might be? She's a lovely little dog (and I'm not a fan of small dogs!) and it's difficult to watch her like this.
