Hi
My boy has lost his appetite slightly over the past three days.

He usually gets alpha a oil, alpha beet and cool condition cubes but at the mo he is just leaving it all.

When I put his feed into his trough he gives the usual nicker but he just won't eat it. He is eating hay/haylage as usual. Drinking as normal too. On light work and behaving normal in every way.

Does anyone have any ideas of why he may be off his food or of any ideas to tempt him?

Thanks

Have you had his teeth checked out.My mare went of her food which was very unlike her had the vet out and he did her teeth for her and she was fine.Even if you have them checked over often they can get a little sharp in between.

Hi

Yep - his teeth were done a couple of weeks ago.

This is why its strange, everything about him, his routine and his life is exactly the same - except for the loss of appetite.

Have you smelt his food, is there any chance that that has gone off? I had a bag of mix once that was in date and looked fine but smelt awful!!

Echo that Iconique. Was just going to suggest something similar. Late autumn, I came up a coupole of mornings to find Sunny had left his feed. If you knew Sunny you would know this is a veterinary emergency! Watched him carefully the next day and he would nicker for his feed as normal but then when it arrived he would stick his head in it then ignore it in a vile temper and stamp around and paw at the bucket. Long story short (and a helpful thread on this Forum) I was not completely emptying the speedibeet, just adding more to it. The weather was very mild and it had gone off to the point where it was rejected even by Sunny! I'd try a different bag or borrow a bowl of someone else's similar and see if he eats that. If he does, then some part of your feed is off. I'd check the alpha beet. x

One of my ponies goes off his feed every spring. Through the winter he happily stuffs him self on Alfa-A Oil and a balancer, but as soon as the weather starts to warm up he ignores it completely and i have to swap to a different chaff...as soon as i start to swap them over he starts eating again!

If there is nothing physically wrong with him, teeth etc...perhaps he's bored of his feed??

Thanks for the replies folks. I have discovered that he doesn't like this bag of alpha a oil! Its in date and is fine but obviously just doesn't like it. I opened another bag and he is fine with it.

Just being picky and awkward - thats my boy!!!

Thats good news! At least not a vets bill.
