Having looked at pictures from when I first bought my mare to ones today, I'm shocked, and really upset that she looks like she has lost weight and condition and though her coat is the glossiest coat I've ever seen, she looks tucked up towards the back her shoulders and over her withers have seem to have dropped weight. I do remember saying about 2 months ago to my horsey friends that she was loosing condition (novice owner) told no she's fine she just looking fitter. Now the same friend is saying she to thin to ride! Ummmm I don't think she's that bad, taking that with a pinch of salt after just falling out with old yo where friend still is..... I've a feeling her back isn't quite right so I'm looking into that and the saddle as stated in last posting. But I can't add images or I would do for advice. I've got her on baileys number 6 fiber beet and Alfa a and hay now with daily turn out she's 16:2. Should I look at changing feed upping feed also? I want to ride her.... Into jumping and x country which she excels at. Been suggested that I use something with wheat and barley? Is this something any one else has done, also not ride her for several months and stick her in the field? Not what I had planned tbh cos I feel once her back is sorted riding will do her good build up her top line ECt! Or so I thought anyway? Being that this is my first horse I just need someone to give me the advice without telling me something difference one week later.

Hello,

Firstly, when were back, saddle, teeth and worming last done? If all done recently and fine then I would consider getting the vet out to do a full check up and possibly blood tests to check there's nothing sinister going on inside.

Diet wise I would be cutting out as much sugar and starch as possible. Fibre and oil will put on weight better and safer than starchy cereals such as barley. Consider a basic diet such as Alfa a molasses free, Alfabeet and micronised linseed with either a balancer or a reputable general supplement such as pro balance or forage plus.

My poor doer tb ex racer is on a similar diet and is looking really good

Who makes micronised linseed? Plan on dropping the mix once its all gone... Like everything it's cost money so needs to be used... Is the micro l expensive? And do most feed places sell it?

The micronised linseed is from Charnwood milling. The website efeed will deliver it next day for about £29 including postage. Sounds a lot but a bag should last you months.

Oh saddle fitted in last two months, teeth done within the last three months vet jabs upto date just been wormed but need to do for tape worm as I'm not sure what she was wormed with last time as old yo did it.... Wasn't told what she was done with, so she was due the other day so doing general wormer and tape wormer too....

Would anyone advise calm and condition as a balancer? If not what would u advise?

Calm and condition is rubbish in my opinion, not particularly calming or conditioning in my experience. You could maybe add a topspec or baileys balancer such as the lo-cal balancer.
