Loss of muscle on hindquarters

My ned has lost some muscle on both sides of his hindquarters. Ive just moved him to a new yard (has no grass in field at all) and he has been off work for a month now. It is it due to lack of work and lack of grass? Just wondering a) how do I get it back b) how long it will take. Im planning to bring him back into work in March and hopefully do some summer shows, but dont want to take him looking like that. He hasnt really lost a lot of weight but has lost a little. Also hes not settling at new yard hence moving closer to home in March (plenty of grass there). He looks really awful at the moment and I really regret moving there.

I would say it is the lack of work. Once he is back in work he will build this back up. However, this is going to take time to do

I agree, probably lack of work. Mine was off with tendon strain for 4 months and lost all her top line. Now I am doing half hour of walking her 5 days per week it has really helped to build her back up.

Lack of work, get plenty of good pace walking in and if possible some hill work.

Satin, even after 5 months off has an arse to be proud of (cob), just as well really as my mum can't resist giving it a good old firm pat whenever she passes her!

Like others have said prob lack of work, try and do some hill work and maybe some raised trotting poles, starting with them on the floor then raising one each time until they are all raised.

The tummy lifts you just pace your arms under the belly and get them to lift there tummy and back, the bum lifts you'd probably need someone to show you, I had a McTimonei chiropract show me how to do it, strapping is banging the area of muscle with a towel or similar to stimulate it. There were some diagrams of how to do the bum lifts etc in a magazine lately but can't remember which one sorry!!

i would say it was down to the lack of work. as long as he is not too thin, just try and put some hay out in the field. walking up hills on hacks (especially with the neck stretched down) really helps muscle building on the back and hindquaters. also, it may help strengthen the neck. It will take a period of time, but the results will be well worth it

gd luck
