My Vet tells me I should be considering a loss-of-use claim with my horse.
Obviously I need to ring my insurance company (NFU) to find out how I go about this.
I was just wondering if anyone on here has any experience of doing a claim like this? And what I should expect? How long does it take?
Also does it make a difference if you have gone over the 1 year claim period for that particular injury (i haven't ...yet)

Thanks

I have been through this. I was with South Essex Insurance Brokers who were helpful and fab through the whole thing.

Yes, the one year period is important. I would phone NFU who should go through the whole thing with you and all the options open to you. PM me if you like. All I can do is tell you what happened with my claim.

Best to ring the NFU. I've just had a LOU claim honoured by them and it was instigated by my vet writing them a report together with a claim for the vets fees.

Thanks for your responses.
The thing is my claim runs out in August. The horse in question has done a suspensory ligament (once last august and again in April). The first time it was wrongly diagnosed so treated wrong and hence he re-injured it.

He has had steriods, 8weeks box rest, shockwave, daily walks and now the vet wants him to have another month of walks and then 3 months turned away.

Once he is re-assesed in 4months my claim will have run out.
However the vet didn't seem terribley hopefully yesterday though when he trotted up slightly lame (although it was hard to tell as he was plunging about all over the place ... what did she expect after 8week box rest!?)

It was Vet who sugestted the loss of use claim.

But what if he is okay after 4months? I'll then have an un-insurable horse. He is only 12 btw. I don't know what to do.

Even if he is still lame after 4months I don't know what to do with him. Did your horses live out their days somewhere?

i claimed LOU through the NFU for one of my mares. It was very simple and straight forward. I filled in the claim form, gave it to my vet who completed her bit then sent it to the NFU. I think i claimed within the year of my vet claim for the same thing i was claiming LOU for. They paid up straight away, just like they did on the vet claim. They called to check her value and said she was underinsured so would pay full value!
She is still insured with the NFU but for a value they decided - £800. It snot much but, shes still insured for vet fees etc and everything else (bar LOU)

If the vets suggested loss of use then he should write you a decent report. It sounds like he is doubtful he will be fully better after the rest period. I suppose at the end of the day it's what you are hoping to do with him. If you plan to keep him come what may you might as well claim for LOU. If he comes sound then you have a usable free horse!

He may be uninsurable now anyway with regard to his legs irrespective of LOU claim or not. You can still insure for other areas etc.

It was different with my horse, she was only 8, I only owned her for two months and I've now sold her as a broodmare.
