Hi guys,

I have a project horse who is an amazing pink papered hanoverian. He is a loss of use horse as was bred for showjumping and did ligament damage in his hoof. After 2yrs off he is now sound as pound and doing really well.:)
He did the injury with his previous owner when he was just 5 and is now 7 going on 8. As he is progressing so well i wanted to get him out and about for a bit for experiance and though about doing some in hand showing with him.
Do you think the judge would be put off by the loss of use brand on him?
He is completly sound and moves so amazingly, a bit of a show off to say the least and is a very eye catching flashy chestnut. His confirmation is brilliant and his good breeding shows through.

But would a judge just see the L freeze brand and nothing else?

Your opions would be greatly appreciated

Without wishing to sound like a thicko , I take it he would still be covered for public liability even though his previous owners had a payout on him , as if he isn't then I guess you couldn't really take him anywhere .

If he is covered then i wouldn't hesitate to take him out in-hand showing , what have you got to lose , your boy gets to have some excitment in life , you get to show him off - he's obviously gorgeous , and you get the experience you are looking for - wether he comes first or last - it doesn't matter , just because he's written off to fulfill someone elses dream , it would be a shame if he was hidden away , let the judge make up his own mind and just go with it....good luck:)

Personally I think it's a lovely story. I too would take him and not worry about being placed - I'd do it for the enjoyment.

how about covering it with hair dye? or is that not allowed? I'm not sure personally but someone on here might know :) if not go out and enjor or try ridden ones if the saddle would cover it.

I read on another showing forum of someone who had the same thing as you, lovely horse that after time was now sound. They dyed the brand so it didn't show and went on to win at high level.

Could be worth a try?

If horse is sound and you're prepared to have a polite little conversation in the face of potentially negative comments then you should absolutely go for it. Good point about insurance but I think you should be able to get 3rd party so to speak.

As others have said it really, really doesn't matter where you come, your horse won't know unless you look disappointed. Do it for him :-)

PS all sorts of stuff goes on with showing horses, hair dye being one of the least weird! Personally though I'd say his L is now part of him. We should admire horses that have more than one career in the same way we do people who make a fresh start after redundancy or other enforced job changes :-)

I would take a copy of why he has been branded LOU from the insurance company. That way people would know it's only because of jumping if it was brought up.
If you still get greif then dye the L. Have a lovely summer enjoying your horse :)

its would be in a hunter/riding horse type class, i have insurance for liability and managed to get a few other things covered as well surprisingly.

He is just written off for showjumping but flat work i dont think will be an issue. I think most of his trouble was he had a twisted pelvis that wasnt treated, as when we first got him he couldnt buck and wasnt playfull, so once we got that sorted he was a completley different horse.

Bringing the papers with you wouldn't change the outcome of where you're placed though, seeing as the only chance you would get to explain would be after the class.

I'd still say for Hunters and such classes, you would still get penalised for it...lovely story or not. We don't even like normal freezebrands on our lot for showing.

I would say hide it too if you can get it hidden :)

My old instructor offered me her eventer on loan, as she claimed loss of use with him. He was as sound as a pound, and all she said was I would be fine doing local and possible affiliated, I just wouldn't be able to get to the level she had got with him, before his accident. She had got him to quite a high level in Eventing, somewhere I would never expect myself to be!!

LOU was for jumping not showing, take paperwork with you and you have it to present if questioned.

Now if you were to take him showjumping more questions would be asked but they'd be aimed at the previous owners who claimed LOU.

Many of these horses go on and have careers in different diciplines.

I think they should have a different brand for certain things, like a D for dressage LOU, S for jumping etc....only the L if everything is covered.

I know naff all about showing but, the 'L' mark is in reality no different than a freezemarl so why would / should a horse be marked down for that? Now if there is a blemish on the horse's leg due to the previous injury then yes that may mark you down I imagine.

Many horses are LOU cases as youngsters, as they are deemed no suitable for the purpose of which they were insured (in this case showjumping). However, as you know, many horses come completely sound - in several cases horses have gone back to showjumping at a relatively high level. All it is essentially there for is so anyone who may look to buy the horse can see it was a LOU case so will want to know why and also any insurer would want to exclude the reason for the LOU should you insure the horse elsewhere. There is in fact no reason why a LOU horse cannot be covered fully under an insurance policy (vets fees etc) but an exclusion would be out in place for the injury and they possibly wouldn't agree to cover the horse for the activity it was previously insured for either (ie jumping etc) unless maybe it was several years down the line and a vet deemed it ok.

If you want definitive answer post the same question on Horse Gossip.

HG is a showing forum where a number of judges post so you will then know

But I would refer to his " conformation" its a bit of a bug bear with showing folks :-)

Good luck

Iv got LOU my horse cant jump anymore and that it but as someone pointed out please make sure you are insured as my company stopped all insurance without telling me and id been riding on the roads he wasnt even insured out of the field my LOU has disappeared so cant help with showing bit
