As none of the insurance companies seem to insure with loss of use without a 5 stage vetting, is it worth having? what are the options if the horse is no longer fit for purpose, which in our case would be simply riding?

if you are only going to be using your horse for hacking there really is little point in having loss of use cover. Most vets wouldn't write a horse off completey and say that it will never hack again because if the horse had a tendon injury or something serious, chances are at some point you will be able to hack it again at some stage in the future.

Loss of use is mostly aimed towards competition horses that have an injury or illness that they can no longer carry out eventing or show jumping or dressage. Chances are these horses will still be able to hack but may never be able to jump or perform serious dressage moves again.

Hope this helps.

The reason to have loss of use would be to get the horse's pre injured value. So it is a fairly expensive insurance cover, if your horse is worth quite a bit.

Not all isurance compnaies require vet certs for Loss of use cover. The compnay I work for do not require them unless the horse is over certain sums insured levels and then a vet cert would be needed whether LOU cover was required or not.

Insurance companies criterias differ so maybe try shop around if you really want the cover but, as mentioned by others it is really intended for competition horses when they are no longer able to continue in the job/use they were intended for.

However, loss of use would also come into play say, if your horses wasn't able to compete but could be hacked lightly/be kept but would need ongoing treatment for the rest of its life. If for any reason you decided you did not want to keep the horse like that (cost of treatment could be high) but it wasn't considered a case for humane destruction you could claim under your loss of use cover for the horse to be euthansed as your death cover would not ordinarily cover economic slaughter.

I recently got loss of use on my gelding who, due to kissing spines, can no longer do dressage (we just used to do riding club level novice/elementary). He's still fine for hacking out, so I got 80% loss of use, have put him out on loan as a hack and had the money (mostly!) to buy something else.
