Hi guys.
has anyone claimed loss of use on their horse ? Do you think it’s worth the extra money it costs ?
lve got a 4 yr old worth £5000 but thinking it might not be worth it on such a young horse ?
any advice gratefully received. X

I’ve only had it for one horse - a youngster like yours - it took an age to prove he wouldn’t come good again including turning him away for a year , medical treatments, physio , x rays , you name it we did it in trying to get him sound!
We had to get a second opinion from a large vet practice that specialises in it and we only got 60% back ?‍♂️
In his case the insurance was worth it and paid for other expenses we occurred over the £5 k limit.
Not sure I’d do it again though as premiums very high …

Once.

She was £5k 10 years ago. LoU was paid out in full as her pelvis was shot. They didn't usually pay in full for a mare, I think the reasoning was that a mare may well be able to carry a foal, but the damaged pelvis meant she was never going to in foal.

I have once but only because she was with a dealer and had just been imported, so no history.
just as well I did as she was written off within 3 months ?
Normally I wouldn’t though.

Fatties previous owner took IOU on him he had a serious heart issue , she took 80% of the considerable insured value and gave him to me .
The insurance company the NFU behaved in an extremely fair way throughout.
We eventually got him right mainly due to a conversation with a local GP about how they approached the care of humans who had the same issue .
I think that it may be worth it for the first two years of owning horses six yo plus that you going to work hard .
My experience is the out and disasters I bought have occurred within the first two up years .
However if you work out the increase in the monthly premium verses non IOU insurance you might well do better to pay the difference into the Building Society and hope for the best .
