Since we've been at the new yard (4 weeks) George has lost 15kg (I weigh tape him each week), I suspect that this is due to the poorer grass and colder weather (he is rugged up). He was carrying a bit of extra weight from the summer so is not a problem, but I don't want him to lose more weight as the winter progresses.

He currently has:
7hrs turnout on ok-ish grass
adlib hay when in
2 feeds of 1.5 scoops of hi-fi lite, 1.5 cups lo-cal each
he also has his ball in the evening with 5 handfuls of baileys economy cubes in.

Should I add something to his feed, and if so what? Or leave it be? (Don't suggest alfa a though, it made him go a bit potty!)

Thanks

sugar beet maybe?? u can get it unmollassed, which shouldnt make him go loopy.
i put my 4yo on it a few weeks ago, and hes not gone loopy, and he is putting on weight
plus theres the added advantage that its cheap to feed!

You can add a drizzle of veg oil to his feed, building up a little more each day. He could in fact have up to half a pint a day! Oil will give him a lovely shiny coat and is slow release energy.

As he is already on the economy cubes with no problems then you could increase the amount of them you feed, then you don't have the worry of introducing a new feed.

Try slowly changing the cubes to spillers conditioning cubes - or alternatively keep his ball as is and add a few to his feed.

If that is not enough, you could also change the hi fi lite to hi fi.

Finally you could also try adding speedibeet.

Suggest you try one at a time rather than going for all three changes at once and if necessary change his diet to these three.

I would highly recommend soya oil for weight gain.
Twiglet is on a very similar diet to George, and can't have alfa or cereals (alpha a turned him into a cribbing, rearing loon).
I added soya oil and he holds his weight 100 times better, his coat his healthier, and I actually find he needs less rugs than he used to - I think this is because of the extra weight he carries through winter and the better quality of his coat.

I dont feed a vast amount to be honest, a couple of glugs in each feed. Baileys make soya oil, as do D and H - give them a call and I'm sue they'll be able to help.
I introduced it gradually over a couple of weeks, have been feeding it for a couple of years now, highly recommend it - Twiglet suffers around coat change time and it helps with the transition.

so if I wanted to try the soya oil, how much would I need to add to each feed? I assume I would need to introduce it slowly?

Thanks

I feed 100ml linseed oil per feed for Beau...as advised by TopSpec

If you dont want to add oil why not buy d and h alpha with oil (it keeps weight on my horse) and you wouldnt have to change his feed only chaff.
