Why is it that they always cast a blinkin shoe just before Christmas.

A couple of years ago my lad lost a front, just about exatcly this time of year. Our farrier had finished for Christmas (was already on holiday), and in the end we had to trailer H and his found shoe about 20 miles to a farriers yard. Lovelly chap, gave us coffee while his apprentice straightened and refitted the shoe.

Two days ago, on our way back from a hack, my OH's mare started to clank, or at least one of her back shoes did. Before we got home I had to pick her foot up and ease the shoe off, as it was in danger of twisting. Very luckily, one of our friends had the farrier coming the next morning, whew! Sorted.

This morning, picking out H's feet, just prior to tacking up. Last foot, near front...NO SHOE  As luck would have it, our farrier is in the area tomorrow.

Why why why why do they always lose a bleddy shoe at this time of year, is it some sort of tradition?

Me too. My old horse, almost retired but still likes a little jog along the river bank, whcih I had planned to Xmas morning, was minus a hind shoe yesterday. Luckily not a front bless him otherwise he would have been sore, but still farrier can;t get outtil next week so there goes our xmas day ride. :(

Mine too! Not ideal when he is off to boot camp tomorrow. Luckily my farrier lives close to the yard and is dropping in this afternoon to pop one back on. I have bought him beer to say thankyou.

I hate all this mud - in the past 6 years (all the same farrier) he's pulled 4 shoes, 2 in the lorry and 2 thrown on course eventing. Past 2 weeks he's thrown 2. Arrrgh!

Another reason why succumbing to the dark practice that is 'barefoot' is such a good idea.

At moments like this I always remember the phrase "why is it the man who wants to tell you about his religion, never wants to hear about yours?"

Unless you know exactly who I am, what I weight, what pony I ride, his weight, workload and whereabouts. I really don't think you are in a position to tell me how I should look after my ponies feet.

I have actually looked into 'barefoot'. But the books and articles I read sold it so hard, and jammed the subject so far down my throat without actually giving me the information I required, that I decided it was in the same neighbourhood as Parelli.

What information did you require? Have you tried asking on here or on UKNHCP? Loads of useful information available.
Anyway, I wasn't telling you what you should do, I was being smug.

My pair don't wear shoes which you would think would save me but Nits had to have the vet yesterday instead! Stupid creature is having a massive over reaction to a tiny cut and needed ABs.

Horses hey?! :D

Well, two of mine are shoeless, however, I really don't think it would suit the aged TB and I don't feel I can put him through months of soreness to find out whether it would work out long term, at his time of life.

My old TB was a bugger for removing his shoes - usually the day before a dressage competition. I swear that I saw him standing in the field with his front feet together with one foot standing on the opposite shoe trying to remove it. I actually lost a small fortune in entry fees because of having to withdraw at the last minute due to lost shoes!

Hearing of you all planning to do the Xmas ride I now feel homesick and so miss the camaraderie (sp) of being in a big yard.

I love where I am now - I have 2 paddocks, a stable and shared tack room. One really lovely owner of the other two horses on the property. The owner lives elswhere and is not horsey so we don't get bossed around - we do our own thing, look after each others horses when one of us wants time away. If something is up with a horse we text each other. We share the same great farrier - who is a treasure at popping out at the drop of a hat to fix a shoe - we feed him with Bacon & Egg sandwiches and coffee and a chocolate Santa from the girls. Bribery!

Takes me back to when I was on a big yard, we all came in on Xmas morning, mucked everyone oout really well and strawed up so that they would be comfortable for the next couple of days (only skipped out on Boxing Day) then we had tea and toast and went out for a fun Xmas ride, followed by a drink and pressies from the boss. Only time I got too drunk to drive home when we missed out on morning tea & toast! Brother had to fetch me.

HAve a wonderful Xmas day folks - hope you manage to get the farrier out.

The farrier is due at 10.00 and has the promise of coffee and my OH's Christmas cake, so I'll be checking to make sure none of the other shoes are loose / missing before he get here. :D

When mine came yesterday I said I was hoping to collect a full set in the field this winter so he can come one day and just shove them all back on. He did see the funny side! :)

I feel your pain, before he went barefoot mine used to lose shoes almost weekly, the final straw being when he removed 2 back shoes when in his stable! He really is very special.

Sound like you have a good farrier too - I reckon I could narrow down to 2 pubs where my old farrier is but would probably not be in fit state to do anything.

My boy has lost his show 2 days ago, He only has front shoes on and has now lost the same shoe twice in 6 weeks, I’m not sure how he is doing it though. However I want to wait until ive had his back done in January before working his so I guess he will wait until then.

Farrier came at just after 10.00. Shaped up and fitted a 'spare' shoe and didn't charge me a bean....the OH's Christmas cake has that effect on people :D

Just got home from a very nice 3 hour hack, including pouring rain. It was just nice to be out and about :D
