Thurs night my horse looses a shoe whilst my friend was riding her - she didnt feel anything and dosnt know when she lost it but she was doing some XC jumps on hardish ground. When she got off she realised she had lost a shoe but Tiggy was sound and seemed fine, so she was turned out as usual.

I bought her in for the farrier to put the shoe back on on Friday morning and she was very lame in walk and turning was difficult with some heat in the foot. Farrier thought she had brusied her heel and sole but couldnt see any signs of any puncture wounds or anything, so put her shoe back on.

I left her in all day friday and by the evening there was no heat or swelling she was totally sound in walk and on turning but noticibly lame on that foot in trot.

This morning she is still a little bit lame on that foot in trot but no heat/swelling anywhere and seems happy and a definate improvement on the night before. So ive turned her out but decided to give her a few days relaxing in the field.

Am I doing the right thing by just letting her chill in the field for a few days? Should i have called the vet??? I feel I agree that she has bruised her sole from being worked on hard ground (unknowingly) without a shoe, and she is a senstive TB type. How long before I expect her to be sound?

If the farrier has checked her and you say she is improving everyday then carry on doing what your doing

Only if it doesnt improve or gets worse then the vet should be called. x

With bruising she could be sound tomorrow or still footy for two weeks it just depends. If you are very worried then painting her soles with keratex hoof hardener is something you could do for her in the mean time.
