Hello Guys

Brought pops in from field last night and she has lost a shoe ! We think it has been sucked off in the mud. Anyway she is fine but I have never had a horse loose a shoe before (lucky) so rang my fab farrier to ask him to come out asap and just refit the lost shoe and give the back ones a trim and fit two new shoes as usual as she was due to be shod in two weeks anyway so no big deal. (she is only shod on the front two). she is also fine - not foot sore or lame :-)

Anyway - I just wondered what people do in this situation - I wont ride her with only one shoe but some people on yard said they might - some said they would have waited until farrier was due in two weeks - some said they would take other shoe off - some keep in stable until farrier came.

Just wondered what all you guys would do ? Farrier due tommorrow so will just turn her out in a dry flat field for today and keep her in over night.

It amazing that so many would do stuff differently!

I dont ride with missing front shoes because the horse is immediatly unlevel. Never had any soundness issues with mine through shoe loss either but had it drilled into me not to ride with missing front shoes. I dont like riding with missing back shoes either but will at a push, although i tend to stick to walk work on a surface

Again its not the missing shoe that so much concerns me as the fact the horse is wonky :P

I dont keep them in however unless theres a real reason for it (i.e. horse is missing large chunk of hoof... incredibly foot sore or theres some kind of other issue)

if the farrier couldnt get to me for a few days i prob ride in a school (although i dont have one at mo)

If I needed to ride I would do flat work in the menage. I have infact competed with 3 shoes before now, he pulled it off the night before a comp. But usually I just turn him out until the farrier comes. It depends on the horse though, some horses go footsore when they loose a shoe in which case I would stable it.

I wouldn't ride with a front shoe missing. If it was a back shoe and I really needed to ride I would ride in the school, but only steady work. I would just put the horse in the field though until the farrier came - I certainly wouldn't box rest for a lost shoe!

I don't ride a horse who has lost a shoe as can make horse v slightly unlevel or could potentially cause slight bruising- I always get a lost shoe put back on before riding. You should be able to turn out though- guess it depends on the horse as some are more sensitive than others!

I don't have that luxury! When/if Jack looses a shoe - he is crippled lame - crappy TB feet! So he gets a cold poultice on (to protect foot), vet wrap and duck tap and he stays in with haynet!

Have to say, even if I could ride, not sure I would with missing front shoe as imediately unlevel!

If she sound and not lame, chuck her back in field and wait for farrier!
