Firstly, this is a horsey matter that I am posting here because it is more private.
Lost my mare on the 13th of March. Totally unexpected leaving me heartbroken.
Then had some family issues and lost my Nannan on the 21st of March.

Last Friday I was persuaded by some people at the yard to ride a horse for a livery. Livery is a shouty and loud woman but very nice. Horse is a 17yr old piebald cob gelding of 15hands. Had beeb told he hadnt been riden lately (found out today he hasnt been ridden regularly for 2 months :( ) Hacked him out with a friend and he was so strong it was frightening. I am strong myself but only short so felt a bit overwhelmed. He bucked me off but didnt injure me and then he seemed to settle a lot.

Rode him again Sat and Sun and he was nuch better but still very strong. I have said I will ride him because I didnt want to look stupid in front of the whole yard. Please dont judge me badly, Im not one for admitting defeat but this horse scares me :( he is strong and bolshy and downright rude. He is very hard to handle and is very strong when ridden.
Please can abybody just help me out as I am worrying about riding this horse and handling/riding him has knocked my confidence. I know this sounds really silly but what should I do? :(

Maria honey pls promise me you wont ride this chap again. He is not your problem to fix and you are losing a lot and gaining nothing by carrying on. I was in the same place after my lad died last year and I bought totally worst horse for me ever. I now have a confidence giving older mare and we are schooling all the time and hacking out for the first time since my old lad retired this afternoon. You need a confidence giver ASAP and dare I say perhaps less superficial yard mates:o

Sorry for your loss, I'd firstly ask myself why no one else on the yard has ridden him?? It could be for the same reason, I certainly wouldn't put myself in a dangerous position to save face but understand its awkward. Could you lunge the little ****** before you ride out or could you slip him a little kalm liquid in his breakfast to take the edge off him?? Don't do anything you're not happy with its meant to be something you should enjoy not get stressed out about!
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Dear Forum Admin team-
if I had wanted to put this thread in Tack Room I would have. I put it in The Club House Section of this forum for a reason! >:(

Sorry for your recent losses. Regards this horse, I would just say to horse owner or whoever else is encouraging you to ride this horse, suggest they get on him. Explain that he has knocked your confidence and you don't want to ride him again. If they don't like it don't worry about it. You safety should be your first priority.

I am so very sorry to hear about your horse and nan, life can be very cruel at times and sends us things to deal with all at the same time. If you are scared of this horse then please please do not ride it again. Who cares what the rest of the yard thinks, you need to think about yourself and your safety this always has to come first. Give yourself time to grieve and when you really feel ready then try and find a nice safe hack that you can get your confidence back on. Horses are meant to be fun and if you are scared then this is not fun. Just tell the owner that at the moment you are not ready to ride at the moment. Take care and do not do anything that you do not want to do x

I would not ride the horse if I wasn't enjoying it. If the livery wants it ridden, she can do so herself or pay someone. You are not a crash test dummy.

They may think they are helping you through your loss, but as this isn't the case there is no reason why you shouldn't say that you don't get on with this horse.

Sorry to hear about your recent losses.
