I don't understand that website, or 'companion' sections in general. You bought a horse, it went wrong, now you're trying to offload it onto someone else to bother with the upkeep?!

That's it in a nutshell

Its bad. And seems to be getting worse - our local pet shop had an ad on the notice board: Shetland Pony foals £50 each, 2 for £90 will make excellent pets. I find it really worrying that people can just go and buy them with no proof of experience or knowledge

I would sneakily take that advert down

What's worrying to me in particular about the shetland foals, is that they are being sold as "pets" as that no way implies they amount of care they are going to need.

Exactly! they'll probably end up being kept in the back garden and shut in the garage in winter. Then when they grow up with no manners and kick or bite the children sent to the meat man. It is so irresponsible it really makes me cross

That is completely untrue in a lot of cases Scribs, my horse was a project horse, and not through his previous owners actions. He is a very aggressive gelding who clearly was treated very harshly in his young years. Now what else to do with a horse like him? Had he fallen into the wrong hands either he, or someone else would have ended up seriously injured. Project horses, if used properly is an invaluable site in homing horses who might otherwise be PTS rather than passed from home to home of unsuitable owners.

It does see, however, in a few cases to be being used improperly for people to offload their crap BUT remember hopefully a lot of people who peruse PH will be experienced horse owners and hopefully be able to turn someone elses crap into their treasure. Which can only be a good thing?

PH does not have the monopoly on idiot sellers or buyers.

I do agree with you on that one. It's hard to understand why some horses are on there - particularly the companion horse further down the page who is only being given away because the owner is having a baby. It doesn't seem a "project" horse.

I don't really know anything about re-homing "companion" horses, so please forgive me if this is a really stupid question but - do people really take on aged 17hh horses as "companions"?

I think it depends on what kind of companion you are looking for.

In the literal sense, I would think you wouldn't want such a big horse as the likelyhood is it will need a lot of feeding and upkeep and naturally be more prone to ailments due to its size.

In the new sense, where some people simply want a horse to look after and dote on, without having to ride it, size wouldn't matter and it then comes down to the horses nature and what the person likes in a horse.

unreal, i just don't understand people like that. I had a read down and was incredulous at some of the poor animals on there. Why don't people take responsibility for their broken or dangerous horses.

Sounds harsh, but 1 or 2 need a bullet..... and I mean that in the kindest way. There are too many nice horses out there and some of them sound down right dangerous???

Many of you might think my horse fit for a bullet, he almost, almost, put me in hospital, he constantly bites me and would happily attack anyone on the yard stupid enough to go into his stable.

Life is simply not that black and white

Here he is, looking like he needs a bullet...

Sorry kitsune, I meant the companion section on that website, and companion sections in general. I didn't mean PH website as a whole.

If a mare has good conformation and can't be ridden through injury, then I can see why it can be sold, but..surely most of these people must feel some pang of guilt, trying to get rid of their 'rubbish'?

It actually makes me feel very uncomfortable, and I'm not one of the easily moved types.

ETA - If ned went permenantly lame, I could never just cast him aside and look for my next motorbike-with-a-pulse. That's why I find HHO members on here who HAVE had this happen to them, and have stuck by their horse so inspirational.

Kitsune, your horse is useful with a problem that can be managed in the right home with the right care. He could be sold from any advert on any website by either stating his issues in the advert or explaining over the phone. He was and is sellable, he just has a problem that needs disclosing and he needed matching up with you.

This is very different than horses who will be lame or mental no matter who takes them on, and that is what this website is filled with. For every horse who could have a useful future in the right home, there are three who are not going to do a job for anybody, their owners just don't want to pay for them anymore and don't want to pts.

Where is the harm in advertising them for a short time - to see if they are any use to anyone, before putting to sleep?

I think thats a fair compromise.

Because say if I won the lottery, I might fancy a paddock full of buggered old toads just to look after, who is to say others like that aren't out there.

I do agree however that realistically if the correct home cannot be found, those such types are better off being PTS.

It's not WHAT the owners are doing - it's the mentality. Assuming because you can't ride your horse anymore then it should be PTS comes into the same disgraceful attitude ballpark as the companion thing.

If thats how you view horses, then fine. But that isn't how I view an animal.
