Got my horse shod monday and after farrier has left noticed shoe was sticking out further than hoof on the sides thought it wouldnt stop on anyway brought horse in last night to find that his shoe had twisted and the toe clip was sticking into his hoof rang farrier up and left a message but still up to now hasnt rang back! So got emergency vet out who removed his shoe and found that one of he nails had worked deep into his hoof and the amount of blood that came out of it was shocking so he was given antibiotics and we have been told to poultice it incase hes got an abscess from it and hes obviously very sore on it anyone has aimilar experience and how long did it take to come right so he can have his shoe back on?

This happened to my horse 2 weeks ago, YO went to turn her out on the Tuesday morning to find her hopping lame and blood everywhere! Her shoe had slipped back on two nails had gone into her sole, YO pulled shoe off and poulticed straight away. Farrier came out that day to dig out the holes a bit in case she got an abscess and re-poulticed, she stayed in that day and the next. On the Wednesday the farrier put the shoe back on but she was still hopping lame, on the Thursday she got turned out and was galloping round her paddock! She then spent a few days being on and off slightly lame but by the Saturday she was fine :)

You need to treat it as a puncture wound, so wet poultice for 5 days, then dry poultice for 3 days, during this time she will either get an abscess or will start to mend and become sound. Please change poultice daily and only put the wet poultice on the hole site, not on the whole sole, no point making the rest of the foot soft when it is just one part that has been penetrated. Then put iodine in to the hole when you start to dry poultice. If still lame after 8 days suggest vet takes another look. Do not give bute it can mask the degree of lameness which would affect judgement of severity of injury.

Hes getting poultice changed AM and PM and sprayed with antibiotic spray was much better walking round stable tonight compared to this morning

and is the poultice dirty with pus. if not then you could try dry poulticing only as it might not have turned in to an abscess and just be sore from the penetration wound and bruise. if sound with dry pad on or 1/10 lame then call farrier horse might be sound with shoe back on, but keep wound clean when in box from the field etc.
