Lost shoe

Okay, Rudy lost a shoe on our ride yesterday and I am in a bit of a quandry about what to do!
My farrier is a 2 hour (trailer) drive away, so taking him there for 1 shoe is out of the question. I don't have the shoe so I can't ask a local farrier to put it back on.
He's not sore on the foot, but I don't want the foot breaking down.
Do I keep him in or shall I get an equi boot type thing and turn him out?
Or do I try and find a local farrier that does NB, and get them to put on 1 shoes...
He is due a set of shoes this coming Saturday.

Can you not ask your farrier if he is in your area this week rather than waiting until saturday, or do you always have to trailer to him?

As the shoe is now off, I can't see that it would break up much more than it already has especially in this wet weather.

I can sympathise though - I've had 3 lost shoes this week and am at the end of my tether !
 
He won't travel to me. I do a 140 mile round trip to get his shoes done.

I think I will just keep him out unless he is showing signs of soreness.

I never had this with Benj, luckily! So this kind of stress is all new to me

if you are worried about it - get a large piece of Fibregee, cut a piece twice the size of the the hoof. Double it over and then use duct tape to stick it on to the hoof. Cover the bad all over with the duct tape - I normally use about 3 layers and press it well down so it forms a complete cover up around the sides of the hoof as well. you can then turn him out with this on and his hoof will be safe till sat. do check it daily as one of my horses was an expert in pulling the duct tape off - it was a great pasttime when bored so I solved that by sticking it to his leg hair once - soon stopped it when he realised it hurt!!

Oh! And I'd just turn him out. I wouldn't obviously ride with a shoe missing but should be fine in the field.

I know, I know......but this guy got my written off horse sound, and now....oh I don't know. Its hard to know who to trust.

Plus he is the closest farrier to me that does pure NB.

I would turn him out. Just leave him until the farrier comes, it won't kill him, and it won't harm him as long as there are no nails in the hoof there isn't a problem.Don't worry about it just wait for the farrier to come and fix him up.
