Not one of mine but a girl at our livery yard. Horse stopped eating Friday morning. Vet called and he thought it was teeth as they were sharp and he had a cut in his mouth. Well they sedated him and sorted teeth but overnight he didn't touch his hay and was quite subdued Saturday am. They put him out and he started showing colic signs so vet called and he was taken to rossdales. He is very poorly and on a drip but no one can figure out what is wrong with him. Bloods are all ok and organs all working but he has a high temp and won't eat. Vet doesn't think it's a virus but we've been warned to monitor our horses. The poor owner is so upset as no one can figure out what is wrong. Please send her and horse lots of vibes.

I know how the owner feels my pony Lucy is very ill and for about a month no one could figer out what was wrong. The not knowing what was wrong was terrable but the not knowing how to help her was the worst. I now have a diagnosis atlast. I hope they find out whats wrong with the poor horse soon and can help make it better. Lots of healing (((vibes))) for horse and big (((hugs))) for owner my thoughts are with them both.

I don't know for certain but am sure strangles would have been eliminated. Horse hasn't been out of yard recently but owner does work in a racing yard which made me think it was a virus although owner says no horses at work are ill. One vet thought perhaps he had eaten mushrooms and there were mushrooms in field so that is possible. Someone else suggested grass sickness but I know nothing about that or what time of year it strikes etc.

The mare I used to ride has similar symptoms to your friend's horse. We too found mushrooms in the paddock and linked it that, it was like food poisoning as she was a very greedy mare but stopped eating. She was well and back to herself within a week so I hope your friend's horse is ok soon. Lots of vibes heading your friend's way!!

my horse had a simialr thing a few years back - stopped eating, very hot and kept lying down (all very unlike him - hes normally eating his head off, under a load of rugs and hasn't ever been seen to lie down in the field) and it turned out o be a virus which had bought on anemia . Course of antibiotics and red cell and he was good to go within 2-3 weeks

My first thought was grass sickness, mind you he is in the very best place Rossdales are fantastic.

Likewise, the weather has been so wet and mild that although it isn't the most common time of year it is a possibility.
