my field is rented so I can not do much on the maintenance side but any ideas on cheap fix for muddy areas - I have mats down on some areas but with lack of hard standing under neath in most areas they just sink

One of the mares at our place churns her field up so owner has put some old rugs down by the gate.He found them from recycle unit and didnt cost him anything.

As a temporary fix you could put straw down. Either clean bales or put down everything other than the dung in the gateways. Not ideal but it does make a difference and at least means you can all safely get in and out of the mud without any problems.

as said above, straw can act as a good mat, but if you have got mats already then might as well use them, dig what sloppy mess you can out of the gateway then put the mat down, no point just chucking it on top of the mud as it will sink and never get it back!!!

What we once did was scrape off the wet mud and lay down a cheap weed suppressor fabric like the one from wickes. Ring local tree surgeons and ask them for there chippings. fill in the gateways and keep a spare pile to top up. Most tree surgeons will do this for free cause it saves them money in disposing of the chippings
