My dad hunted me out some old Badminton slides from the 60's sometime - one of the riders jumping is my aunt, but I'd love to know if anyone knows who any of the other riders are...

(this should probably be in the PG but thought it might be more of interest in here)

And number 63, well, you can't not know those knees! Looks like Toddy.

ooh, fab pics, thanks! I don't think they're as far back as the 60s, though, could be wrong. look like early 80s to me. I think the first time Toddy did Badders was 1983 on Southern Comfort.
i think i can see Richard Meade (pic 3?), Captain Mark Phillipps (pic2?), possibly Princess Anne, Toddy (pic12), possibly David Green.

Thanks, could possibly be 80's - mum and dad have been every year and they were just a random album of slides so it was dad's guess - thought someone could tell me

Is it me or are those fences bigger than they are now??

[/ QUOTE ]

hahaha some might be!
when they are spindlier timber, but the same dimensions, they look bigger sometimes. that wooden bar trakhener looks vile, and the bounce is biiig.
certainly there are fences there that would test the best nowadays.
oh, sorry, no, back then because there were no skinnies everything was really easy and everyone went clear all the time, obviously they had to bring skinnies in to make it harder because everyone was finding it easy peasy....!

LOL How true, wonder how many riders would turn pale green if presented with a Badminton course like that nowadays?!

IMO that's part of the problem, to jump fences like those you had to be one hundred percent committed and not go in half heartedly and hope, you really had to attack

actually, i think i can pinpoint the year, i think it was 1986 or 87 (did it run in 87? no record on BE of that year, oddly), it was the year before the ski slope with upright rails at the bottom where Ginny fell off Murphy and LG fell off her grey, which was 1988 iirc.
i'm sure someone will correct me though!

great pics! 3rd one down looks like Mike Tucker and I think the lady with the blue hat cover is Jane Holderness Roddams (Sp?) Now those look like proper Badminton jumps much more fun to watch!!

I agree with it being the 80's (none of them of my mum though so certainly couldn't give you the year!) It made me smile as one of them had its tail taped up....I remember that 'trend' well

Fantastic pictures though. Those fences were so difficult, makes a little bit of a mockery of the badminton course just gone....particularly when you consider the 2 roads and tracks and the steeplechase course the horses had tackled before even stepping foot on that course.

Look as well alll of their saddles are staying in place and they don't have a 5 point breastplate on.....amazing!

Could you imagine if Hugh Thomas unveiled Badminton's 2010 course looking like that? Now there's a thought...

Fantastic pics, thanks for sharing

It didn't run one year as it got rained off. The next year they bought it forward by 2 weeks to get better weather, and now they have put it back a week again. Lets hope global warminog doesn't let us down.

In the last pic the car is a V reg - 1979, so it is at least that.

Fab pics

It was rained off in 1987. But agree those pictures would be early eighties. There is a picture near the end with a car with an old old style number plate with a V at the end which places it new in 1979.
Picture 2 and 15 is definitely captain mark phillips, the horse could well be Lincoln, who he won Badminton on in 1981. So I'm guessing it was 1981

Thanks for sharing those, its lovely to see all the old fences, its just how I used to remember it
