Just got my vaccs reminder, so got a few questions:confused:...

Is it worth getting my 30yo pony vaccinated, she doesn't go anywhere anymore? She has flu and tet every year for at least the last 20 years (she used to compete nationally all over Germany).

Does anyone take their horses to the vets to save on callout??

Does everyone pay the vet or get billed afterwards??

Mine need their teeth doing too. It is economical to get the vet to do this too while they are out?? None need sedation, just thinking of watching the pennies.

Thanks x

If she isnt going anywhere then the vaccs she has had over the many years will probably give her a decent level of immunity and you could consider just doing the tetanus jab which is only every other year (but def dont stop the tetanus one, vital).

I have teeth and jabs done together every year, makes sense. We are billed afterwards. It tends to be small animal stuff/stuff at the surgery that gets paid for there and then, callouts to your own premises get billed later. But does depend on the practice.

If your vet is happy to do it, it may well save some money to take the animal to the practice. Personally I like to have stuff done at home as the horse is relaxed there, but if they are a good traveller and used to strange places like yours may be, it would be fine.

If your old girl doesn't go anywhere and she's kept somewhere where she has limited contact with other horses then just have the tetanus jab. The equine flu jab can provoke an unpleasant reaction in older horses whose systems are more fragile - you're introducing a virus after all - but tetanus is a must.

I keep my shettie at home and he rarely goes out, but do keep his tetanus up to date. I have the vet out at the same time of the year for all routine jabs and checks, it would cost more in fuel to travel mine to the vets than call out fees.

I would not bother with the flu jab either, I stopped that when my old boy was about 20.

Our vet does free call out on certain days so our vaccinations are only £30, other wise it would be a £50 call out !!!!!!!

Thanks everyone, that's really useful.
I'm going to ring around tomorrow and see what sort of prices I can get teeth and jabs for, as I'm not too keen on my current vets.
