Good Morning you knowlegdable lot,
Iv just discovered this morning that one of the foals has lice & will have probably passed it onto the other foals she is in a field with & possibly the other horses on the yard! grr!
Does anyone has any good recommendations for louse powder treatments, as bathing isnt really an option. We dont have any real facilities for bathing, & she was completely unhandled until december when she came to us & is still very nervous so dont really want to undo the good work that has already been done.
Also whats good treatments for the rugs & stables?
Can you tell this is my first experience of lice
Thankyou!

I was wondering about this too. We have given a home to an infoal pony mare, she is very itchy and I planned to give her a good powdering with louse killer. We seemed to do this as a matter of course years ago.

Reading the label on the tin it now says not to be applied direct to the animal. I do have some flypor but not sure about using that due to the foal. She is quite a hairy little beastie too so powder would have been more effective than say Coopers or so I thought.

Is deosect liquid ?

Any advice much appreciated as although we have had foals I have never had one from birth !.

yes deosect is a liquid which you dilute & then spray onto them. Iv just bought some from www.mileendequestrian.co.uk not the cheapest place but i needed some other stuff & knew they would post out fast.
Im still not sure if you can use it on rugs, etc, but iv read a few posts of it being used on yearlings so im hoping it will be ok. You have to do a patch test first.
If this doesnt work im hoping to try frontline spray but will have to get that from the vets!

I have also recently found my 3yr old has lice, i have bathed him in insecticidal shampoo and will be every 10-14days till there gone. I have also been using louse powder on rugs, in the stable and on him inbetween baths. I have also cleared the stable out and louse powdered it.
Not sure what to use instead of insecitcidal shampoo but this worked for me last year. Don't know why he gets them :(

its ivermectin (eg noromectin) wormers that are meant to help, but only when the lice are biting/sucking the blood.
I think my plan of attack is goin to include a wormer too as they are all due anyway.

My shetty had them last year and I found them hard to get rid of. In the end I had the vet out, one jab, followed by a spray on wash a couple of weeks later. I didn't realise that some of the powders don't actually kill them, just repel, although they didn't even seem to do that!

Copious amounts of rug washing also followed, as I had been dusting them, but didn't trust the powder after that, so gave them a bit of a boil instead!

The other girl at the yard said her shetty caught them from mine. She didn't bother with more than 1 application of powder and didn't wash her rugs, claiming that 'leaving them exposed to the air would kill them'. I have since moved yards to my own place and amazingly, have had no incidence of them this year!! Sorry, off topic!!

Hope you nobble the little blighters soon. :)

I have never used the Deosect on rugs loz9, and cant look at the can as it got pinched when my yard was broken into! I can say that I have used it more than once on yearlings and also on "poor" animals and that none have ever had a reaction. Very wise to test an area first. Lice are a bind are'nt they!
Oh and you will find it quite economical - a can will last you years - if it doesnt get nicked first ! :-/
