Today I rode my ponies after they had had a month off while I received treatment for an injury. I have to say that I am now an even bigger fan of having calm ponies who know their job. Even though they have done nothing for a month none of them put a foot wrong. Not spooky or silly, just did exactly what I asked of them. Of course it was just some gentle introduction, although with my schoolmistress I went to the forest with our YO. He always rides fast, and we have one track where we always gallop. Hats off to her that she gave me exactly the speed I asked for, staying in a nice canter even though the other horse was tearing off ahead. They all got extra carrots, really I am so grateful to have such wonderful, genuine ponies. I could not love them more.

My horse is nine and has been perfect just about all the time for a couple of years to the point where I believe he is a good, genuine grown up boy who trusts me and wants to work with me. At the one and only pleasure ride I managed to take him to this year a steward said to me "Isn't he good on his own?" I've honestly never been so chuffed in my entire life since as a young horse my horse said repeatedly that in no uncertain terms was he ever going out riding away from the yard. Ever. And I'd never make him. With, or without anyone else.

It's taken great help and a long time and now sometimes I feel like I want another four year old for the stress and the struggle. There is something wrong with me that I can't just chill out and enjoy a horse that is straightforward and cooperating. I think I'm just at the point where it often all goes wrong health-wise. You are right to enjoy and appreciate your good horses.

Exactly like mine! I'd think nothing of jumping straight on mone after time
off and would Completely trust all of them. My retired mare had three years off
And one day last spring I just jumped on for a walk out one day and she loved it! Something to be said when you know your horses inside out!

This is what I love about blue! Even as a 6 year old you could leave him for a month, get on and he’d be exactly the same. I know what I’m getting everytime with him.

rode in a storm the other day and he just got on with it and actually produced some of the nicest work he’s ever done

You jinxed me!

I drafted this before I went out this morning:

My current five year old has been exactly the same since he was broken at three. He is never any different no matter how long it is since he was last ridden.

And then today when I rode him for the first time in 5 days, he was on fire!

Thanks. ?

PS glad your hand is letting you ride again.

I seem to have the self destruct button and want the excitement and challenge of something green, slightly unhinged and a little bit odd! What i need and what i want are different and its taken a while to get it in my head that my next horse will be the 'what i need' and hopefully they will be easy and straight forward like yours :)

I had that horse once and i sold him because he was too boring. I'd do anything to have him back now.

The big old horse who I ride is VERY grown up!! He can be trusted under any circumstance, weather, situation.
I rode him out after he had been untouched for the whole of the first lock down and he was exactly the same as when I left him.
