I rang up the spillers care line to get some nutrition advice for my underweight colty and the lady I spoke to was lovely and explained all about starch levels and sugars etc etc and basically said that the D&H mix I am currently giving him is high in starch which means he is being a numpty in the field and burning it all off before his body has time to absorb it.
So she advised I fed wineregy equilibrium growth. I didn't realise Winergy were the same company as Spillers.
Unfortunately I didn't quite catch her name but she was fab! Only problem is I don't think any of the feed places round here stock it!
If anybody know of anywhere in Cov/Warks that stock winergy could you please let me know?

I dont really take nutritional advice from the helplines - in my experience they have only recommended their own lines!

I tend to feed hi-fibre low starch diets and find a mix of different brands works best for my two. For example I have dengie chaff and spillers cubes.

TGM on here is really good about comparing different starch/sugar levels on virtually everything - maybe try pming her for something with the equivalent values in winergy equilibrium growth if you cant find a stockist?

You'll be able to get Winergy quite easily - phone up your local feed shop and they can order it in with their next delivery.

i fed this to my youngster and whilst he did well on it, he couldnt physically eat the amount they recommend so he was fed under the RRate, he is doing more work (just backed) and am just reviewing his feeding as he needs more condition, am probably going down the lines of a balancer!!

just found this bit of info

Winergy is a complete feed and is v. low starch - the growth is only 5%.

Yep this is what the lady said. To be honest it seems good to me as I don't have to buy chaff. Also I've had a look at the starch levels in other stud/foal mixes and it's very low in comparison.

I initially had this problem but split the feed into 3 doses and it's worked well ever since. However, this is only possible cos my horses are across the road from my house and I only work afternoons so they get lunch just before I go to work.

They've recommended 1kg a day, he's only little but I can split into 3 if completely necessary as stables is only a 10 min walk away.

totally agree with spillers being great, they helped me a lot with my hat rack. very friendly and didn't just promote their stuff, were v helpful with other brands.
