Lovely Stamp of Horse?

It means 'type'. You will also hear it said for progeny. A stallion 'stamps's his stock. If you look at my filly Adorable Alice and then look at her sire Archie you can see him all over her.

Ah okay, I figured it was something to do with breeding! So does a 'lovely stamp of horse' mean it's a lovely type, or it's very typical of its breeding?

For example, the humdinger (champion show cob) is an excellent stamp of a cob, although you could probably go further and say he sets the standard template!

AA's show horses are also excellent stamps of horses :)

Stamp means true to type, but usually have the basic good confo, good amount of bone and correct proportions of body according to breed :)

RE a sire 'stamping' his stock. This is my geldings sire

It's not just the colour (although that is very striking) but the type and also temperament. I have read ads for horses that sound so similar in temperament and look the same type to my boy (there's a lot of variation within the breed), that have turned out to be by the same stallion.

Ah I see, thanks for clearing that up! At least now I know what it means when I'm looking at ads ;D
Also Faracat, your boy is gorgeous!

Sorry for the hi jack, but on the same subject, what does 'bred in the purple' mean? Has puzzled me for years!

The best bloodlines, top quality and successful relatives. I'm guessing here, but the 'purple' may well relate to purple being a colour associated with royalty (the dyes were expensive to produce). It's a bit like seeing 'black type' when referring to a thoroughbred. In a sales catalogue, part of the pedigree is is shown and winners of listed and graded races have their names in bold.

Someone will probably come along now and tell me I'm talking tosh!

Not at all, you are right.

thank you, great explanation! :)

Just a word of advice on judging type and stamp, especially when judging underdone horses or youngstock. It is very easy to look as something and pass it by as junk............

only for it to prove your judgement wrong in the future..........

A lot can be learnt by watching good quality classes of various breeds, I find it fascinating and very educational.
