The vet is happy for Ed to go out in the pens for a week (hoorah) he has finished his course of bute but will be on reduced rations of soaked hay for the rest of the summer.

How do you guys feel he is looking weight wise? I have attached a before and after photo, I dont think he has lost much, but then i wouldnt want him to after only a week I guess.

He is walking out much happier now and the farrier is here next week to do his feet and hopefully then I can contact the vet and she will advise me on bringing him back in to light work. That might be a long way off but we'll see.

Ooh what a gorgeous boy!! He looks like he's lost a bit of belly but that could be the angle on the first photo- he looks great now anyway

Out of interest what indications did he give of laminitis?

For me, it was the shortness, choppyness of stride. And then his baloonage over the past week or so (prior to diagnosis) he was however, only stiff on trot up, no digital pulses, only a small reaction to the hoof testers.

So the vet diagnosed lgl with the advice,to get and keep off the weight. He has lami rings on his feet, which might suggests he's had lgl before, making him more succeptible to a bout.

He probably hasn't lost a lot of weight, but well done for sorting him out quickly!

I hope that he'll be fine, and it sounds as though he had a bit of a laminitis wobble, rather than a huge full blown attack.

Good for you, for catching it in time

He looks like he could do with losing a bit to be honest - it will take a while for it to really show - chunky monkeys like him like to hang on to their covering!!

- it took all of last summer with my mare on box rest to really shift her crest and so you can just see her ribs - who knew cobs had ribs??

You are doing the right thing - better that he looses it slowly and it will help when he starts to do a little exercise.

Glad he is feeling better - take it slowly and he will be fine!!

Look at his chunky arse too.

I was a complete fool and thought that because he was in hard work - he couldnt possible get laminitus...I learnt my lesson there!!

Thanks FS, hopefully he'll be back on form in a few months

I'm really glad you caught it, and I'm sure that he'll be up and running in no time!

BTW don't beat yourself up, we've all learned about laminitis the hard way, and it's still a very misunderstood disease. I just keep trying to learn more about it all the time, so you're not alone!!
