Horse has steriod induced laminitis that has re occured this year, seems to be suffering from pssn and last few blood test have shown a low red and white blood cell count. He has no loss of appetite and has been OK with light work, but when stepped up a bit he seems to go backwards.

Any experience of this? Could it be a virus, or a cancer?

I know this is not as bad as yours but few months ago my horse looked a bit anaemic so vet told me to give him a whole bucket of alfalfa so I was giving him alfa a lite but he went off that as the last bag i got the chop was really long, and being 32 he couldn't be doing with that so I rang Dengie and asked them about their alfalfa pellets and she said they'd be even better for a lamintic because they had NO molasses in them, my horse loves them. I also made sure he has a good vit and min supplement and I give him NAF EnerG for his blood, it has improved, so not sure if this would help, not sure how this would effect the white/red cell blood count.

What has your vet said regarding the blood results ?

It could be a virus. my chap had a recurring virus (like ME, very weird) which resulted in a very low white cell count. Our vets were the royal vet college and the head horse chap recommended pink powder and an iron tonic. At that time he recommended visorbin but thats not made any more so maybe the NAF one is similar. My horse loved the visorbin, it was all green and gloopy. Do check for sugar levels in anything tho, I suspect the visorbin may have been popular with my horse due to sweetness tho I didnt taste it myself! His virus attacks got less and less frequent and he hasnt had one for the past 2 years now.
