Good morning everyone,

I'm from France, and i'm sorry for my english. I hope it is understandable :)

I have a low withered and flat back horse, and a great saddle (WOW saddle, flat tree, perfect !!). It's impossible to find some stuff in France for my horse. I know you have some horses like mine in England, it's why I allow myself to come to this forum :)

I'm looking for a saddle pad that is not for high withers. I've tested Lemieux : too curvy, it's wrinckled behind his (low) wither. I've seen the Weatherbeeat saddle pads, same shape
I don't want neither wool nor thick pad, only thin saddle pads that protects correctly my saddle from sweat. I've heard about Mattes and Eskadron.

What do you use on your flat back horses ? What have you already tested ?

Thank you so much for your help !

thank you so much for your answers ! It gives me some choice.
I've seen Premier Equine, it's a little known in France, great quality and affordable price.
We don't know Rhinegold and Balance international, i'll take a look !

Paradoxically, high wither saddle pads are best for this type of horse. I always used Griffin NuuMed high wither numnahs on my no withers, flat backed native and they always stayed up in the saddle gullet and under the saddle. They are expensive but very durable.

Thank you for your answer ! Indeed, I had a Nuumed with the saddle i've sold (highwither lightweight wool numnah), and it was really great ! I have to sold this numnah (too short with my new saddle), but it was great on his back.
I've tested a Lemieux (cotton, without wool), it was awful, a big fold behind his wither. A friend of mine tested a Weatherbeeta saddle pad, same problem. Maybe it's because they are rigid ? And the Nuumed is not ?

I bought a very expensive Lemieux for a rescue horse with muscle wastage behind the shoulders from my saddler and it was horrible. There is something about the way NuuMed are engineered that gives them stability under the saddle. I also use their side-saddle numnahs which are just as reliable.

thank you ! I like Nuumed, and i miss my numnah. Great quality and durability. And i've read they can make a custom saddle pad if we want. I'll take a look !

I would go Mattes, Nuumed may have some with a flatter topline but I find their cotton pads a little soft/floppy to give good stability under the saddle on very low withers, they can be prone to slipping back. I always say a good cotton pad should almost stand up on its own.

thank you ! I've only tested a Nuumed with wool, which was ok. On the internet, the cotton saddle pads seem to be for high wither horses only. Like Lemieux.
Thank you for Mattes ! They have a good reputation in France too.

Mattes are a nice neat shape too, particularly GP/VS which is hard to get right if you don't have a bulky saddle, and they have a generous cob size so brilliant for 16.5 to smaller 17.5 saddles which can be swamped by some full size pads.

i need a dressage saddle pad, but i agree, we can choose which size we need for our saddle. Some other brands are sometimes too big or too short, depending on our saddle size.
