Hi all....I just wondered if anyone could explain a lozenge bit to me? He is currently in a eggbutt french link snaffle, he needs the softest bit going as he hates the bit - instructor said he's been broken/ridden very badly in young years due to his muscle tone and goes completly hollow and is tense all over, thinks he has been tugged/yanked on the mouth:mad:.

Whether it be Lesson/Hack/Schooling/Lunge and even Warm up for jumping.... EVERY day i am working on getting him long and low and i am seeing some improvements but soooo hard (i'm not the most experianced but have a fab instructor) trying to get a horse with the head carriage of a lama to the floor is trying to say the least :D

Anyway 3 people have suggested a lozenge to me but i know nothing about them? His last owner (or current really, he's on full loan) said he tried to spit it out when she tried it? why would this be? BTW she is not the one who yanked on him, it was his prev owners!!

Anyway any help/ideas info would be greatly appreciated :)

i was asking about the bit but ANYONE who has or had a horse with these type of issues, anything that helped please share your knowledge with me :D

The answer is: try it and see. I use lozenge bits of various makes/types on LOTS of horses, I am very fond of them - but they are not a magic bullet and don't work on every horse. To get a horse comfortable with his mouth/your hand involves much more than just the bit, but it's a reasonable place to start, obviously.

Believe me if i knew of any magic bullets for this boy i'd give my right arm for one.....although that wouldn't help me with ridding very much :D

Thats great, i'll give her a call.

I haven't tried anything on him yet, just what he came in, only had him for 4 months, got him nov, had him 2 days and he was rushed off to bell equine for a GA and a week in there after a barbed wire cut first day in the field, had 6 weeks off work and then it snowed

So not the best start but been ridding him near on everyday since End of Jan so we are improving slightly;)

I did think about a happy mouth though? hmmmm....

Happy mouths are generally cheap so should be easy to try one, but i'd also try a straight bar one, he may not like the joint.

Neue Schule are more pricey so ideally i'd try whatever Heather advises from a bit bank first :)

Good Luck

I would imagine he'd hate a joint, but maybe a straight bar?

I wanted to try the myler combo (had it for schooling on my old horse) but he HATES poll pressure, in fact also want to invest in a comfort bridle when i have some money :(

Thanks ill call heather :)

Let us know how you get on :)
A straight bar Happy mouth shouldn't cost you more than £20 or someone on your yard may have one you could try.
