I know this probably isnt the right place to post, but as its relevant to towing I wondered peoples opinions on LPG conversions? I am looking to buy a new 4x4, I have seen a Nissan X-Trail that I like but it has an LPG conversion. It seems a real bargain but is that because I am missing something?

I have had a couple of cars now with LPG conversions and had no real problems so far. It is certainly much nicer to be paying 74 p per litre than the £1.40 near I paid for petrol the other day.

Check that you have a petrol station close by that can provide LPG and see what other ones are in your area or along your usual routes. Find out if this x-trail was converted professionally or not, some insurance companies will want to see a certificate to say the conversion was completed correctly.

The systems I know about are fairly simple, a second tank is added somewhere for the LPG (usually inside the boot so you do lose room) and then a second set of fuel injectors are added so you have one set for the standard petrol engine and one set for the gas. The gas system can then be pulled out if you don't want it anymore.

I wouldn't touch a LPG conversion with barge pole that I didn't know the history of. If they are done well, I am sure they are brilliant but I had one that was badly done - it cost me a new engine!

We've had 4 Landrovers with LPG conversions and have had no issues.

The tanks for 3 of ours have been mounted underneath the chassis and for the other it was a smaller tank in the spare wheel space so in all cases we've not lost any boot room. (But we did have a car without a spare wheel on board).

My advice would be to make sure you see the paperwork for the LPG conversion and check that the company who did it are kosher.

As previous poster says, it's great to paying so much less for gas than petrol. Just make sure you know where your closest LPG stockists are. As for travelling there are plenty of LPG stations on the motorway network and you can also get a map showing LPG stations across the country.
