Anyone have/tow their horse with one?
smile.gif

We have an old one and we don’t use it to tow the horses but my husband uses it every week to tow around clay pigeon traps. He loves it, I hate it but we won’t get into that!

used to use ours all the time very good vehicle, would suggest you go for a long wheel base as they make the tow smoother and less likely to get a wobble on. But all in all was a great vehicle. One reason they are so good is because they are so bloody heavy!

my YO has a 90 and tows a 505 with it. Im looking at selling my Discovery and getting a new Defender

See my hubby wants a discovery, but I think the Defender would be a better option for lots of reason :

1. I don't exactly like cleaning my car and defenders look better dirty!

2. I live on a road without a driveway, and often lose wing mirrors/get scraped etc. A defender would be easier to replace these bits on and not cost the earth!!!

3. We couldn't afford a new Disco and I've heard dodgy stories about older models.

4. I think I'll like the idea of brumming about the countryside in it!!

I have a defender 90. I had a freelander previous to this but it just wasn't up to the job really. I tow a 505 and a 16hh horse with mine. Comparatively to the freelander it gives the horse a much more comfortable ride - the tow bar is much lower on the freelander and so the floor of the trailer must have sloped forward slightly. The trailer brakes much more smoothly on the defender (I think the freelander was too lightweight especially when braking going down an incline). Can't fault it for towing really - it drives exactly the same towing as without.
But I have to use it as my regular vehicle and it is definitely slow - top speed 60mph and takes ages to get there!
Also I had heard the interiors were very basic on them - I don't have the very basic model or the top of the range one -I have the middle of the road one - I think its called the county model and find it fine once you get used to the door being right against your side (hence why so many people drive with their elbow sticking out the window!) It has everything my freelander had except a sunroof its just not packaged in a "posh" way but that doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Mind mines going in for a service next week and I'm looking forward to my freelander curtesy car to drive for the day and actually have something zippy to drive for a change!

i LOVE mine!!! brilliant towing vechicle, off road stuff ace. Mine is an old is one without any electrical cr*p on it to go wrong, basic it's much much better that disco. I have portable mounting block i use front bumper!! I have saddle rack in back so both saddle fit lush, OH has fitted spots front and back, plus radio with girt big speakers

Can pull 2 large horses no problem, pull large hayledge bales, other folks out of mud if correct low gear select

Is perfect for towing as seeing as90% of the farmers in the UK have them for pulling trailers full of sheep & cows!! I can't recommened them highly enough. Also have a Disco which pulled a Range Rover for 120 miles on a long flat trailer with no problems. You cant beat a motor if it has the green oval badge on it!! Am building a Disco at the mo to replace my old one!
Though the 110 is a much better towing motor due to it's length & they are one of the only motors to have a 3.5ton towing capasity.

I think we're gonna go for a 110 tbh

My plan is to get a plain old ugly one, get it resprayed black, and hopefully buy it regular presents (such as snorkel, checker plate, roof rack etc!)

I'm all excited tbh!!! I SOOOO want a tonka type brum brum!!!

(it's all very nostalgic really, I'm realising being brought up with only brothers and male cousins, must really have imprinted some sort of tonka mentality!

If you go for an old one make sure you check the chassis & bulkhead as those are the most expensive & time consuming parts to replace. Also if you can go for a 200TDI engine version as it's the best engine they ever did. This is advice from my Brother as he re builds them so know what hard work they can be!!! If you require any info advice just give us a shout would be more than happy to help!

Go for the defender!!! The real landy!!!

All defender owners wave to each other!!! We ignore disco, freelanders and RR owners.

You dont mend them!!!! Well, perhaps wing mirrors but any dents just add character. Also you have to keep them muddy- its in the Defender Owners Club Rules. lol

Just a tip though, I would go for lwb one with windows, as it helps you to see where you are going!!! Also lwb is better for carrying things like fence rails, hay etc I have a swb but wish id gone for lwb with side windows. The blindspot is huge and Ive nearly run over a few shoppers in tescos carpark!!

If you are buying new then Id also go for the heated seats!! I think its the only optional extra that makes a difference! I wish I had them!

My Bro is in the Defender club!! Me in the Disco owners club & my Uncle in the RRR club!!

We helped them run a 90/110 Owners rally up here October 05 was great fun a great people!!!
grin.gif

We have about 10 of the darn things!! Plus lots of halves & parts!!
Agree the dents give them character & you must not clean it is against ownership rules!!
