This is Lugs at 12 weeks old, he was born ginger with grey goggles, but now his coat is coming out he is almost rose grey, he has ginger, black and grey hairs, tetrach(sp) spots and ink spots any ideas on a final colour, here is his breeding.
Thanks

:D:confused:

Thats what I thought too, but now I'm not so sure, he is a really hard colour to discribe, I have his sires half brother at home and he is white grey now(aged 17) but had a dark mane untill he was 12/13 and was very dappled as a youngster, it's the tetrach and ink spots mixed with the faint tones of strawberry wrong on Lugs that are thowing me.
Have seen quite a few foals that grey out but never anything like him, Sarah keeps telling me I have bred a freak!!

At least she's not saying you are a freak, be thankful for that!

Grey. Spring was exactly the same, born red hot ginger and over the winter went to rose grey as a yearling. When she went at two, she was definitely grey and has got greyer since according to her owner. Her mother wasn't called Rainbow for nothing!

Shame I quite like the spots. Was kinda hoping he would go dappled and might stay dark for a while, oh well. Thats what you call sods law, I wanted a ginger filly, got a odd coloured colt decided that I quite like his colour and he's gonna change to dull and boring grey!!

Think I might run him on though as I (personal opinion) think he is stonking and if he can jump like his mother should be well worth it.

MFH I will ring you one evening this week, been a bit busy and cought Sarah's bug so been collapsing in the evening. Sarah is always telling me I'm a freak too but I can accept that, being 6ft 9in with size 14 feet the word GIANT springs to mind.;)

Ahh Rita I won't mention your height;):D hows the lovely Arch?

SN that would be just my luck!! and to make it worse he would probably be gay and useless!! At least Pink is a solid colour and he shouldn't look like a moo cow (gotta be thankful for small mercys)

Grey even sounds dull doesn't it, maybe i will just pretend he is a pinto-appaloosa-piebald-skewbald-overo-dun-cremello, what do you think, does that sound cooler?

You have lost me there!!! why would you not mention my height? there is nothing wrong with my height, perfectly normal height I would say. WHERE AS YOU..................

Me 5 foot ONLY 4" below average for a woman
You 6 foot 9" that would make you 11" inches taller than the average man, I rest my case X

Thank god your horse is the dogs to make up for the slightly damaged owner.

We love you Rita, you take it so well. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Without doubt its grey, very rarely a horse is born grey most are born in what is their base colour, grey isnt a colour its a mask and a horse destined to be grey will go through many shades before becoming white, indeed some may never go completely white but will become fleabitten ,the fleabites being the colour of the horses base colour ,thats why all horses when registered should have their base colour recorded as once they have greyed out you cannot tell what colour they are genetically unless they do go fleabitten,in my experience foals born with goggles tend to grey out earlier than those without ,
Its a very easy matter now to determine colour as there are lab tests that are very reliable .
Worth remembering is the fact that in order for a horse to be grey it Must have at least one grey parent,no matter how many greys are in a horses background if its not grey it cannot produce grey until and unless it is put to a grey horse then it carries a 50% chance of producing a grey offspring.

Thanks for all that savino, the colour question was really just an excuse to post pics in here, I knew he would be grey really, I have been saying it since he was born!! Not really bothered what colour he is apart from the fact that he will now take more cleaning it doesn't really bother me. And I think you are right I think he might go flea-bitten as for the base colour not really up on colour genetics and not bothered what his base colour is as a good horse is never a bad colour (apart from coloureds:p), but thanks for the info:)

Sorry just re-read that and it sounds a bit blunt, not meant to be I should just be working really so rushing to post;)
