I looked at a lovely, perfect for me five year old mare on Sunday. She hunted with the Quorn and bumped a wall - hence she has a squishy lump about three inches above her knee. She hit the wall three weeks ago, it swelled and came down to the size it is now. I didn't know about the lump when I went to go see her. I would like to event her and hunt a few times a year.

Had her two stage vetted, and the vet believes it will not cause her any problems. She flexes fine on it and she moves beautifully.

I now have a decision - would you buy this horse?

I dont think it will cause problems, my horse had a knock many years ago from jumping a solid jump, about 6" above his knee, that turned the bone solid like a splint, years later it just dissapeared. so dont worry if it goes solid.

PM me with your email address and I will send you pictures of my hunter jumping 6 foot hedges with a lump you can clearly see in the photos, it's so big. He got it this year from a kick, when he coul dnot bend his knee to lie down for over four weeks, but it has not affected his performance one iota.

Buy the mare if you like her - get a bob or two knocked off for the blemish and use it to buy a cold laser pen off eBay. It's working absolute wonders with controlling the size of my boy's knee!

Thanks for the help. The advice from the vets is it probably won't change, go up or down or cause her any trouble. But then again, it might. If this is the only horse I get to buy for five years, is she the right one for me?

vets will always err on the side of caution as they don't want you to sue them hence why alot of vets now don't pass or fail a horse but give you the information on whether they think it will be suitable for what you want to do and a basic health check. If the horse had a knock a few weeks ago then chances are it will all be fine. My horse had an accident in the field 2 years ago and ended up with a knee the size of a football. He went lame on it and there was talk of possible bone chips and the possibility of an mri scan.It turned out fine and he has no issues from it at all.If everything else about the horse is perfect then it wouldn't put me off of buying.

Thank you for the support. Going with my gut (god help us) and have agreed to buy the lovely mare. Will go get her on Sunday and start another horsey adventure.

Thanks also to CPtrayes for sending me photos of her leaping over hedges on a lovely horse.

I hope you have a lovely time with your new mare. If you have as much fun as Radar and I do, you'll be smiling for Britain. (He leaps the hedges, I just tag along for the ride :) )
