I noticed yesterday that my boy has had a lump appear back between his cheekbone IYSWIM. It is definately to one side and feels hardish, as opposed to a fluid filled lump. Would this sound like a tooth problem? He is 7 and I have had him just under a year - he hasn't seen the dentist properly in that time as he was a nervous wreck when he arrived. The dentist did have a quick look and was happy to leave until another time. He is much better now but I suspect he will need sedating by the vet. It doesn't appear to bother him at all when being ridden, and he is eating fine. He had the vet last Tuesday for annual jabs and he comment how well he was looking. Could it be a bite or something? Views gratefully received. Thanks.

could be a bite, don't want to worry you but if on the jawbone itself it could be a small fracture which is repairing with new bone. Had that on my horse, had a small op to remove it and all ok, we reckon he must have done it cracking his jaw on the stable door.

It's not actually attached to the jawbone, you can put your fingers round it, and it moves a bit. He doesn't seem overly bothered, and as I say, he is going well and eating up. Have a lesson on Sunday so will ask instructors opinion then

My pony had an abscess here some years ago, not tooth related. Seemed to be caused by a blocked salivary gland in the chin groove. There was no change in appetite or behaviour, so I just kaolin poulticed it (blob of poultice in the chin groove!) and it erupted nicely. Very messy, but a textbook abscess and didn't even need the vet. That was in June, too and I later found out that it's quite common at this time of year. I'd just moved fields, so different grass - not sure if that had an effect on the salivary glands or not, but worth mentioning (I think!).

Thanks ladies - he was going so well on Satuday I forgot to ask my instructor! It seems softer than it was and quite moveable beneath the fingers, and he still isn't bothered so I am going to wait and see what happens I think..........and we did move fields about 10-14 days ago
