Went to see Ronnie today and hoped to exercise him but school booked, plus when grooming him I discovered that he had a biggish lump/bulge under his stomach. He seemed very grumpy/stressed (he usually quite grumpy/stressed) but was eating ok and drinking ok. Any idea what could cause this? I almost called the vet but my vet thinks I'm the most paranoid mum on the planet.

ETS: Oops sorry meant to put this in vets forum

I was told that lumps like you have described can be a sign of a hernia, not sure about anything else though am sure there must be more reasons for bumps but I ditto Gigglepig and call your vet or do you have a experanced person (dont mean that you are not just not sure sorry if you are) that can have a look

I have asked YO what she thinks, it's probably nothing but I've just not seen anything like it before. My old mare had a touch of COPD when in and she had quite the reverse - heave lines. Ronnie seems to have equivalent but it sticks out

Oh and no, I'm not very experienced so don't worry

Keen but inexperienced!

It sounds like odeama to me. It can feel like a hernia and changes from hard lump to fluidy.
My boy only had it on one side, behind girth. It looked rectangular in shape. Did not seem to bother him but vet told us to ride him to help it disperse.

Yes, it felt fluidy and was quite angular in shape. YO doesn't think it's anything to worry about. I'll be down there first thing (snow permitting) to check he's ok, and if so, to ride.

I had a pony who had a similar thing but it was not permenant, if yours is not permenant it may just be be an allergic reaction to something but if it hasnt changed in size within a couple of days then get a vets opinion

Sounds like it could be an odema. Keep an eye on it as it might be an indication he's unwell and under the weather. If it doesn't clear up in a day or two I'd give your vet a call.

Was it like this??

This was my mare a few weeks ago. It appeared overnight and went down in a few days, before I took her to the vets for her itching problem. I showed the vet the pic but she wasn't really very concerned about it. But it can mean things are going on inside sometimes

Lots of possible causes - a haematoma (usually from a kick) or if it's close to the girth I'd wonder if he'd been girthed up too tight. (Had a real problem with horses ridden by one whipper-in as he girthed too tight, then didn't release the girth gradually - problem went away after I threatened to break BOTH his arms if it happened again!) Elasticated girths can be heavily implicated in THIS problem!!

Could be something as simple as him lying down with leg tucked under him and shoe digging into girth area. Is it sore? Hot? Does the swelling pit on pressure?

It's much smaller but in a similar place. I double-checked today and it has definitely gone down, and now equals a similar bump on the other side! By chance I was looking at a friend's horse and he has a similar bump, just a bit smaller. I'm wondering if it is a touch of oedema just from being in and perhaps nothing more than that!

I'm going to keep a close eye on it - it was warmer than the flesh surrounding it, slightly, but didn't seem to leave much of an indentation - though hard to tell as he's quite fluffy and also very ticklish! Vet is hopefully out on Tuesday so I'll ask him to check it over then.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.
