I brought my boy home about 3 months ago and when I bought him i did not see anything abnormal in this area, he passed a vet check too. I noticed swelling around 2" from the top of his neck and put it down to new hay introduction. Only problem is, it hasn't gone away and i'd like to get to the bottom of what it is.

Thing is, I have him at a livery yard that seems to be constantly changing the hay, from long sweet hay to short hayleage type stuff. Im not happy about this but, the person owning the yard is very much, take it or leave it (i have no other livery near me at all). Im putting it down to the fact that the hay is being changed on a constant basis. What would your thoughts be. He is only 4, it is causing him no pain or discomfort ( that I am aware of) ... Any thoughts?

I have enclosed a pic as best i can if you can see a slight swelling at the underside at the top of his neck... cheers everyone.. soz cant get it on for some reason !

obviously not much anyone can help with without a pic however I would say 2 inches from the top of the neck sounds a bit high for grass glands to me. If you have the image on facebook, set it to public and copy the url then paste inside image commands like this:

Sorry Guys. Im hopeless at this but this is a link to a pic. Hope it works!

Thank you for your feedback.

Ah, she is grey. I can't see a photo of a lump, just a photo of her turned out, but with a grey horse and an unexplained lump near the top of the neck it is possible it is a melanoma. Some horses get them there rather than under the tail.

Sometimes they will hang round for years and not change, sometimes they do grow.

If you are concerned I would give your vet a call.

It could just put your mind at rest, it could be just a bite or grass glands, but with no photo it is hard to tell.

Yes, sorry about the terrible pic! Thank you for the advice, Melanoma had crossed my mind so maybe a little check up would be the right thing here to confirm or clear anything up.

Thank you x
