Lump inside horse's mouth?

The dentist was out seeing my horse yesterday and noticed that he has a really big lump on the inside of his left cheek, it's upwards of the corner of his mouth and maybe 2 inches in length and maybe half an inch wide. It was tender to touch. There are no signs of any trauma from a kick or a bite, the skin isn’t broken inside his mouth,it is cheek coloured and doesn't look red or angry, and isn’t noticeable from the outside. Has anyone come across something like this before?

Could it possibly be from his bit? The dentist hadn’t seen anything like it before in that area. He has been very resistant on his right rein with a reluctance to bend right which has made him a slightly bridle lame and we’ve been trying to get to the bottom of it, but this would tie in as it would make the left bit ring push against the sore part.

I’m worried I may have caused this as my hands are quite inconsistent which we have been working so hard at rectifying, I'm gutted to think I may have unknowingly hurt him by possibly twisting his bit or something?! He’s in a snaffle, a loose ring Sprenger KK Ultra. Unless he has had a knock and it is just coincidence. I really don’t know how long it has been there either.

Any ideas would be great! And also any ideas on the best way going forwards would be appreciated. He went lovely when I rode yesterday before I knew about this lump, and the dentist wasn’t overly concerned, just need to keep an eye on it really and hopefully it will fix itself over the next week or so.

Thank you!

My grey cob has exactly the same thing also noticed by the Dentist. It is not sore and has not got bigger in two years. I think it could be from bits during his life but also fear it could be a melonoma being a grey. The vet said to just watch it and if it gets bigger then he could do a biopsy, good luck with yours. You could try reverting to using a hackamore.

I have come across these in grey horses, one was so big that there was no room for a bit in the horses mouth however that horse worked well in a skawbrigg bridle.

I actually was thinking it could be from him getting a knock in the field and biting his own cheek as because of the shape it's almost like he's just grabbed hold of the side of his cheek. I'm struggling to see how a bit could cause a lump that shape? It's very strange! It wasn't there 5 months ago when he was last checked by the dentist.

Sounds like you could be right about biting his cheek. Mine is more of a big hard lump inside the corner of the horses mouth where the bit sits. Vet did say as long as it is not dark grey in colur then all was good.
