Ok my friends horse has a lump near his jaw. The said horse isnt off food, not cough, not nasal discharge, not high temp.
The lump burst yesterday, with puss coming out.

What could this be? My first thought was strangles, but it has no other symptoms. Could it be a nasty fly bite or kick??

Thanks guys.

If it is a large abscess type wound then my advice, treat as if it were strangles until vet has been and told otherwise! Quarantine the horse and disinfect yourselves and all utensils.

Hi.

One of my horses had strangles when it was younger and she had no symptoms at all other than the lump. There were actually 3 absesses that burst and the vet said that if she hadn't have been such a greedy horse she wouldn't have survived it.
So its good that your friends horse has no other symptoms and is not off his food!!!!
A course of antibiotics will clear the absess up.

Probably just had an infection, or foreign body. Good puss coming out. Keep it open and clean. Wash with salt water.
It may also be a tooth problem.
Agree with others treat as strangles as a precation although unlikely as no temperature

My friends horse is just getting over strangles and he had lumps that burst and puss came out. He had no other symptoms though. Even the vet didnt think it was strangles but the test came back positive. Best get the vet i think to be sure.

Hi sorry for the delay in replying.

Vet came out to see horse on the 25th July, before it burst. He said it wasnt strangles, as lump isnt near throat, as more near jaw, and also has no other symptoms.

ahhh I see - maybe get him out for a jab though, you don't want the patch to get infected. Or give them a call? They may just say hibiscrub and leave anyway
