Baron came in with a swelling on the outside of his front fetlock last week. On closer inspection there was a pinprick of a cut (looked like a prick from barbed wire). He was not reacting to me pressing but was ever so slightly lame and had a little heat but not enough to make me overly concerned. I put him out and it was the same the next day although he seemed sound on both the straight and a circle.
Decided to stable him for 2 days and it was the same (slight swelling around the cut) so got on him but although he did not look lame he felt slightly unbalanced so I got off and I turned him out again as the stabling didnt seem to make it any better.
The swelling has now gone down but there is still a little lump and very very slight heat. He is totally sound and I rode him yesterday and he went lovely.
I just wondered if this lump is just the scab healing from underneath or could it be something worse? I think it looks worse than it is because its on his fetlock joint. If you look at him from the front the lump is on the bit of the fetlock that sticks out the most but there is no swelling around it and you can clearly see all the fetlock defenition the same as the other one. But as the wound was so tiny and you could not see it unless you wet the leg I do not know how deep it went. As the swelling did not spread and the cut was clean with no strange substances coming out I ruled out infection.
Any ideas? Worth getting the vet out? The cut is now scabbed over and Ive just smoothed it with vasalene to keep infection out as im paranoid as he got cellulitus 2 weeks ago in the tiniest of cuts
