lump on neck... any ideas

as above.. my boy came in yesterday with a swollen neck on one side.
he looked very sorry for himself and very fed up.
its a flat lump about the size of 3 of my hands, right in the middle of his neck and up to his crest, it feels hard and there is heat their.
it is only on one side and very sore if i touch it or push it.
he isn't lame. i have given him 2 bute today and will give some more tomorrow.
i think he has had a fall in the field and pulled a neck muscle.
anyone else had this or any ideas..

well you self medicated so your diagnosis was/is obviously correct! hope he doesnt need scans and xrays. the bute will mask all the indicating factors .... lets hope he hasnt fractured a vertebrae in his neck .... but i daresay you could give him some more bute .......

It could be anything from an allergic reaction, to a neck fracture, to a torn muscle.
You really shouldn't have given 'bute without consulting a vet first - I'd advise you to phone one to look at your horse tomorrow.
