Hi,

My horse has a lump on his sheath. It doesnt appear to be bothering him, but does anyone know what it might be? I'm not sure whether to get the vet to make a special trip out to see it or whether it would wait until he has his jabs in September. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

I friend of mine described somethig similar on her gelding recently. They suspected it was just a fly bite but vet put on antibiotics just in case.

How long has this one been there, has it grown?

ester - its been there about 3 weeks i think. it dosnt seem to have grown but then I see it every day so might not notice if its grown a little bit

krissi - could it? Its quite smooth - almost like there is a broad bean under the skin or something. I thought sarcoids were a bit 'lumpier' than that? (feel free to correct me!)

thats quite a while, it could be a sarcoid, they do vary and sheath area does tend to get them quite a bit.

I would suggest you either get the vet out.
Or take a succession of photos of it over the next couple of weeks to try and assess any changes.

As Ester says, sarcoids vary, the mare I ride has several different types, one of which is like a small bean underneath smooth skin. It may well not be a sarcoid, but I would personally get a vet out to confirm it one way or another.

Looks like a sarcoid. My boy has one in pretty much the same place. My vet has checked it, and does so every time he comes out - but has said that it is fine to leave at the moment as it is not causing any discomfort but just to keep an eye on it. Could you email the picture to your vets and see what they say, then they could assess whether they needed to come out or not.
