Lump on tongue

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the above. My horse has had a swollen/lumpy tongue for a while now. The vet is coming down to check it out and I didn't get him out any sooner because:

1. He is eating fine
2. He is drinking fine
3. He is breathing fine

it is the strangest thing and I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what it might be before the vet comes (he's coming on tuesday).

The swelling itself starts about half way back on his tongue so i first though that he had possibly been stung or something. I was cold hosing it and waiting for any change but nothing happened. I was hesitant to put his bridle on to begin with, but decided to test it, and he's 100% fine with it in. He even leans on the bit like he normally does and has seemed fine to be ridden and lunged with the bit in. The lump is under the skin, and looks to start just after the gap between his teeth. It is normal coloured, doesn't appear to hurt him and he salivates like normal. It also doesn't appear to have any lacerations, pussing or the like around or near it. It also seems to go right down to the back of his tounge, so I would expect it to cause him breathing problems, but it doesn't seem to.

As I said, the vet is coming out, but I was just curious as to what people think it might be as I've scared myself reading about tumours and all sorts.

Thanks in advance

Are you sure this is just not just his normal tongue?

Is it like a raised, ridged area? They all have this, it's just no - one normally looks that far into a horse's mouth

Really? OMG I feel like an idiot if thats what it is! I remembered noticing it when he seemed a bit dull and a little touchy feely with his mouth so i cold hosed it, but I've never seen that much of a horses tongue so not sure what it looks like that far back. It looks ever so slightly ridged at the back, but do you have a photo? I've searched all about it but can't find anything.

No photo to hand I'm afraid. Maybe you could check out another horse at the yard?

Don't feel like an idiot - better to be ovr cautious than not notice things. Maybe the ridged area starts lower down on some horses? I had the same panic a few years back - I thought my horse had an elastic band tied round his tonue or something

Top marks for getting a hose that far into your horse's mouth though!

Thank you very much. I'm going to compare him to another horse on the yard and I'll go over it with the vet anyway (As he's coming down to do his tetnus jab too). I have a feeling his looks bigger because when I open his mouth to ahve a look he pulls his tounge back.

Re, the hose: He's an odd horse and loves drinking from it and playing with it. My mum keeps telling em to be glad I noticed something that normally goes un-noticed, I'm just hoping thats all it is now. Thank you very much for the advice
