i bought my 6yr old ISH with a five stage vetting that noted she has a smooth, hard, cold swelling on her jawline on one side. Mildly sensitive to firm palpation. The vet said he didn't know what it is but it wasn't warm or overly painful so not a problem and possibly just an old kick injury. This week (after owning her for three months) the swelling has suddenly got warm, is obviously painful for her now (she is eating on one side only and flinching away from touch on the jaw). My initial thoughts are that it could be a tooth abscess but i am not vet/dentist so I just wondered if anyone knew of anything else that it could be? also, if it is a tooth abscess how is it treated/how long to heal etc? vet is coming tonight or tomorrow morning

We had a youngster with a hard lump on his jaw and he was hardly eating, he had a broken jaw! He was managed with antibiotics, bute and very sloppy feeds and it took about 10 days before he could eat properly again. They did consider an abcess though at first so it could just be that, or perhaps she has had a kick on an old injury and it has just flared it up. Our pony still has the lump on his jaw and he broke it in late winter/early spring.

I had a 3yo old that had a lump in his jaw that arose a few days before he was vetted to be sold. Thought it was a tooth abscess but following x rays found to be a bone abscess in his jaw bone. vet thought it could have been from a very deep thorn or something. He had IV antibiotics to start and it gradually (I am talking months) subsided. However he had no pain on it and ate like a pig!
