A few days ago I noticed a scabby area under my horse's chin but quite far back. Almost wear the throatlash goes under but not quite that far. Its on the left side, not quite on the left jawbone but the left side of the chin groove. I picked some scab off but didnt do much with it. Checked it tonight and its more like a lump and its a bit tender for her when I poke it. The hair is lost on it where I picked the scab too.

What could it be?

I have the vet coming on friday to give her annual vacs so will get her to check it then. Am a bit worried though.

Don't want to alarm you but years ago my exmoor had strangles and an abcess came up in the area mentioned

The guy with the horse stabled next to me had a look at it yesterday and said its too far back for strangles and he's very experienced with horses but i'm going to worry till the vet can confirm.

If it was strangles I would expect your pony to be poorly.
Usually they get a very snotty nose and look depressed and unwell before the abcess's form.
Fingers crossed it isn't
