Lump under tail?

I was brushing ponios tail and noticed she has a lump about the size of a pea near her girly bits

over to the right hand side.

I didn't think to take any pictures, but may be able to get one tomorrow while up.

She is a 29 year old grey mare, if that makes a difference. I have contacted her owner (I share her so all decisions re: vet treatment etc are down to her)
 
It may be a melanoma, very common in grey horses, and that would be a typical site for one. Most vets would just say leave well alone - occasionally they can weep, but most just sit there doing no harm. If this is her first one at 29 years old, I wouldn't worry about it

I have spoken to her owner, she has seen it and is keeping an eye on it to see if it changes size/weeps or anything.

I will get a picture tomorrow, she will be so embarrassed as she is a lady!

Definitely could be a melanoma, at 29 years she is doing well if this is her only one! As Rowreach says probably best to leave well alone unless it suddenly changes or causes her any trouble.
 
It will be a melanoma. Keep it clean if it gets at all sore.

There is nothing you can do about them. They are unpredictable and aggressive.

I lost my 17 yr old to them on Saturday. His 1st one developed when he was 11 and in the last year or so multiplied greatly, to the extent they blocked up his back passage. There is no treatment or cure and I had no option but to PTS. On post mortem they were also visable throughout his intestine, which means they were very advanced and we were fighting a loosing battle.

It is VERY rare for them to cause these problems. So don't worry. If she's only got 1, you really don't have anything to worry about.
